The exemptions from taxation in Mon- treal are something enormous. The churches, benevolent institutions and par- sonages belonging to different denomina- tions, all of which are exempt, are valued at $7, 000,000, aecerding to the last annual report of the City Treasurer. It will sur- prise many to know that the cssessed value of Protestant is greater thao that of Roman Catholic churches, the figures being $1,354,000 for the Protestant, and $1,207,- 000 land for Catholics. In the mat- ver of parsonages the difference is small, the Protestants having | $235,000, and the Catholics $241,000 ; but while the Cath- olic churches generally own their own par- sonages, the Protestants are chiefly rented premises. The benevolent institutions be- longing to the Catholics are assessed $3,- 160,000, and those of the Protestants only at $700,000. Opposition to these exemp- tions is becoming greater every day. In- cluded under the head of benevolent insti- tutions belonging to Catholics is) an im- mense amount of real estate belonging to nunneries, to the Church of Notre Dame and to’ the sulpicians, from which a Vast revenue is dérixed. A, chrious personage died last week, says the ‘ Parisian’ of the 4th ult., at the age of 72, the Count Napeleon Bertrand, son of the companien ef Napoleon L. at St. Helena,, The cont was a very accentric man, and every year he used to hire a room in a hotel and go to bed for three months, after having given orders for food to be brought to him once a day and not a word to be spoken by the servant. He was asleep during the siege of Paris. One day the bread was so abominable that he flew into a rage and forced the waiter to tell him the reason why that city was besieged by the Prussians» Count Bertrand was stupified for a moment. At last he got up and wandered about the hotel for a time, saying to himself: “Paris besieged! be- sieged ? what ought a Bertrand to do?” And, after a few minutes’ reflection, he said, ‘‘1 will go to bed.” And he went to bed and slept out the siege.
