The trophy is silver, two feet tin height, on a wooden base, and on the side is the figure of Mer- 4-nry, which forms part of the Signals crest and is known as 'iiil('ir Jimmy."

PHONE CONNECTIONS BUPTED - Many city residents were without telephone service yesterday afternoon when work- men busy installing a new traf- fic light at the corner of Kent and Great George streets acci- dentally drilled through one of the cables of the Island Telephone Company. ephones were affected by the early afternoon interruption in service. but practically all of

them were back in use by 6 p.m. as company officials and work- men went rlght to work as soon as the break became known.

CITY POLICE-A man charged with the theft of an automobile was released on suspended sent- ence for one year on settlement of damages to the car and a rccognisance of 5500 to keep the peace. ,by the Stipcndiary Magistrate on Saturday morning. Dr. A.J. Murchison. Medical superintendent at Falconwood Hos- pital, has just returned to the Province following I yeu"g absencg in British Columbia. where he stud- ied the latest. techniques in the treatment of the mentally ill.

Most of Dr. Murchison! time was spent at the Essondalc Hos- pital, New Westminster, which is the British Columbia Provincial Mental Hospital. But he also had the opportunity of visiting mental hospitals in New York and the State of Washington.

In connection with the Essen- dale Hospital the new Crease Clinic was opened this year. It was de- signed and equipped to function as a diagnostic and active treatment centre for mental illness and is provided with departments in Ill the medical specialties. These in- clude radiology, cardiology, neur- ology. eye, ear. nose and throat, surgery and clinical laboratories. In addition there is complete equipment and facilities for the practice of psychiatry.

Impressed with Service

Dr. Murchison was given the complete freedom of the hospital which is under the direction of Dr. A. M. Gee. Director of Mental Health Services for British col- iimbia. He was particularly im- pressed with the depth of services provided the patients.

In the Crease Clinic, a 300-bed unit, patients are quartered for a comparatively short period of time for therapy. Usually they have four months of shock and insulin therapy and group therapy. All possible diagnostic aids are provid- ed the staff and the physical con- dition of the patient is thoroughly explored as being of prime import- ance.

There is also 9, social service de- partment which delves deeply into the case history pf the patient and determines his home conditions. Interviews are obtained with near relatives and every effort made to assist the patient to recovery and eventually to return to a. normal life.

Extensive use is made of recrea- tional facilities with dances and parties held regularly and moving pictures supplied for entertain- ment. A new building now in course of erection will make avail- able bowling and games of all kinds as well as having a swim- ming pool. There is also a library for pntients' use as every effort is made to produce condltiom as near as possible to everyday living.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is greatly stressed with weaving. woodwork and metalwork provided the pat- ients to try to get them interested

in something early in the period of their stay and thus keep them occupied. -

The Clinic only takes these pa- ,tients whose cases are not acute .-and who will respond to therapy treatment. If after the four months stay there is no response the pa- tient may be transferred to the main hospital.

In connection with the hospital is a large training school for psy- chiatric nurses, who though not of R.N. grade are specialists in their own field. The hospital staff consists of 20 doctors many of whom stay for one or two years for training. Wheresnrgery be- comes necessary it is carried on at one of the ordinary hospitals tvith Lobotomy being done at Vali- couver General Hospital. However, the Essondale expects to have its own surgical department in a short time. o

A Growing Problem

Dr, Murchison states that the problem of mental illness is a growing one which must be coped with. There are. he said, approx- imately one million citizens in Can- ada who are permanently. part- ially or temporarily disabled by mental ill health and points out that in 1945 the population of Can- ada's mental hospitals was 50,000 while today it is 65,000. an increase of 30 percent. He said it is now the Number 1 health problem as it strikes more people than polio. heart disease and cancer combin- ed.

Another feature of his visit to the West Coast which favorably impressed Dr. Murchison was the Woodland School for those who are mentally retarded or deficient. Oin- crated in conjunction with Essen- dale Hospital it has a capacity of 1,200 and provideq all forms of help for the younger people es- peclaliy.

Besides the school there is child Guidance Clinic to deal with 'problem' children. Dr. Murchison was impressed with the excellent work the clinic does in handling the problem o adolescents. In many cases, he said, there is a physical or emotional reason for the action of youngster who get into trouble and the clinic tries to find the causes. In some cases the children are found to be mentally defective and they are sent. to the Woodlond School. The clinic also maintains travelling units which visit Iii parts of the Province.

He says that much progress has been made here in the past years, but feels that the staff has to op- erate under the serious handicap of lack of space to properly pro- vide the necessary facilitles. "To- day." he said, "we stress active therapy and the psycho-therapy approach". He knows there is a real need for a clinic to permit ex- pansion in treatment which is presently handicapped by lack of adequate space. At present he is trying to find space for the estab- lishment of the new dental clinic

Nurscs' Training

The Medical Superintendent said that the training of nurses is ex- pected to be expanded shortly and if possible will include both men and women. It is hoped that this will be done in connection with other hospitals here to permit the nurses in training at Falconwood to spend specified periods of time in regular nursing duties.

Dr. Murchison said that one of tile reasons for the increase in mentally ill cases is that people are living longer than formerly but that the brain cannot keep on as long as the body.

The staff at Falconwood has been increased since the Superin- tendent left here on his post-gra- cluate study course in British Col- umbia with the addition of a psy- chiatrist, a social worker and a psysical therapist. HDW8VBf,' prior to this Dr. Murchison was mostly alone in looking after the Falcon- wood Hospital and Infirmary pa- tients both in a psychiatric as well as a medical sense.

In 1949 the daily average resid- ing at Falconwood was 303 and in the Infirmary 199. They were maintained at an average daily cost per patient of 31.66. This is for below the- average daily cost per patient in British Columbia where it is s2.74.

During the five year period from 1945 to 1940 the average yearly ad- missions to Falconwood were 104. with 103 being discharged.

Dr. Murchison said he met many former Islanders while he was away. He travelled by car going through the United States on his way west and reported a wonder- ful trlp. Among the things which stand out in his memory are the Bear Mountain Bridge crossing the Hudson River in New York; the Turnpike Highway going into Pitts- burgh where for l20 miles there are no police nor speed limits; the hillsides near Butte. New Salvation 1 Amy Officers Arrive In City

Senior Captain and Mrs. Leslie Tibcombe arrived in the City over the week-end to take charge of the Charlottetown Salvation Army Corps in Iuccession t Major and Mrs. Ernest Hutchl son who recently left for their new post in Ottawa.

Prior to coming in Charlotte- town. Senior Captain and Mrs. Titcomibe were stationed for five years in Nanalmo. British Col- umbia, and this is the first time their work has carried them into the Maritimes. "We were very Impremed by the friendliness and the warmth of the welcome we received," the Senior Captain said last night, "and we are looking forward to I period of fruitful work in the Province."

During the war years, Senior Captain Tilcom-be spent two years in the R. C. A. F. Special Serv- fees in Regina. Saskatchewan. and was then transferred to the mil- ltary Auxiliary Services. serving for eighteen months overseas and at the end of the war he was in North-West Germany. He was Poof-ed to Nanaimo on his return.

The Senior Captain and his wife, who is I third generation Salvationist. hiwe thirteen years service as Salvation Army Of- ficers, and are particularly in- terested in all phases of youth work and youth activities.

Installing New Traffic lights

City workmen were busy over the week-end installing two more in the series of city traffic lights.

They are being put in at the corners of Grafton and Queen streets and Kent and Great

George Streets.

The rights are the same type as that now operating at the corner of Euston Street and Elm Avenue and will work on the same time change frequency. It is expected that they will be in operation by the end of the week.

Former York lady-Passes

The sudden death of Miss Mar- garet Vessey in her 83rd year occurred at Cornwall, Sunday morning, Oct. 7th.

Miss Vessey died of I heart attack before medical aid could reach her.

A daughter of the late George Vessey and Margaret Mabon, she was born at York. Prince Edward Island, in 1868, where she con- tinued to make her home up un- til about ten years ago when she and her only surviving sister, Mrs. Robert Thompson, moved to Charlottetown. Miss Vessey came to live at Cornwall one year ago.
