Canada Agrees To Serve Three- Power Indo-China Truce Commission

In accepting a seat on the three commissions which will supervise the Indo-China cease-fire and arm- istice agreements. the government said it has no illusions about tl1e magnitude and complexity of the Les .

Canadian representatives on the three commissions to be set up in Viet Nam. Loss and Cambodia will be named shortly.

The statement said the govern- ment believes the commissions have a reasonable chance of op- erating effectively and making a constructive contribution to peace in Southeast Asia. It added that Canadian refusal to be a member of the commissions could delay and complicate implementation of the cease-fire agreements with un- havlly and possibly even serious results.

"We have no illusions that the task we are undertaking will be either easy or of short duration. but we take satisfaction from the fact that in performing it Canada will be playing a worthy and re- sponsible part in an effort to strengthen peace." the announce- ment said.

Canada was asked July 21 to be a member of the supervisory com- missions by British Foreign Sec- retary Eden and Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov. joint chairmen of the Geneva peace conference.

"The government has decided to accept this invitation only after detailed study of the cease-fire and armistice agreements whlih are to be supervised by the in- ternational commissions. and with full knowledge and appreciation of the responsibilities and difficulties that will go with membership." the statement said. "There are no illusions about the magnitude and complexity of the task." TWO-YEAR. JOB .

It is understood the job will take about two- years and will require between 150 and 200 Canadians on the three commission - an es- timate made last week by Exter- nal Affairs Minister Pearson.

The announcement emphasized that Canada's acceptance of mem- bership on the commissions does not mean this country will be called on to enforce the Indo-China cease-fire "nor does it involve any new military or collective security commitments for Canada."

OTTAWA (CP)-An emergency session of Parliament may be called in August if Canadian rail- way workers go on strike in a last- ditch attempt to force the rail- ways to grant them multi-million- dollar "fringe" benefits.

Parliament probably would pass legislation to prevent a strike tak- ing place or end one already in progress. The legislation would be similar to that approved to cut off the rail tieup which paralyzed Canadian train transport and left the country's economy limping for nine days in 1950.

Prime Minister St. Laurent dis- closed the possibility of an emer- gcnry session of Parliament on his return to Ottawa Wednesday from his summer home at St. Patrick. Que. He attended a cabinet meet- ing called to discuss Canada's role on the lndo-China truce commis- sion and will welcome the Duke of Edinburgh on his arrival here to-
