THE closing examination of the Prince of Wales’ College and Normal School took place to-day. His Honor the Lieutenant Governor presided. Among those present we noticed Hon. D. “Laird, Rev. J, McLeod. Rev. W. R. Frame, of the Pro- testant Union; D. Montgomery, Esq., Supt. of Education; Messrs. Charles Palmer, Thomas Foley, Hector McLeod, lohn McSwain, Wm. Coftin and R. Craw- ford. ‘The ladies were represented by Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. H. McLeod, Mrs .% ftin,and Mrs. Brown; there were also quite a num ber of old students present. The exercises ‘commenced with pupil-teaching, lessons being given by Mr. W. W. Alexander, Miss BE. Boswall, and Mr. James Landrigan, n the order named. A lesson in Algebra was then given by Prof, MeLeod, and one in Astronomy by Prof. Anderson. Read- ings were then given by several § the students belonging to the three English classes. Miss Woolner read a short selection from Tennyson ; Miss Max- field. Miss Gregor, Miss McPhail and Fred. McLeod read from Shakespeare ; Miss Bos- well from Macaulay,and Miss Dogherty from Milton. A short address was given by the Principal on the work of the year ; then ame the giving of prizes, accompanied by much manual activity ; afterwards speeches were delivered by the Lieut.-Governor, Rev. J. M. McLeod, Rev. W. R. Frame, Hon. D. Laird and Charles Palmer, Esq. Reference was made by the speakers to the want of interest taken by our public men in the progress of the institution, none of them being present on the occasion ; this Mr. Palmer

Professor Anderson explained that the name of Maggie Brown would have appear- ed in the Prize List for Map Drawing if she had only sent in her Map before the List vas made out. The Map was beautifully drawn and would entitle her to a prize.

An Awful Confession. MAXWELL ENDEAVORS TO EXPLAIN THE ST. LOUIS TRUNK MYSTERY.

In the Maxwell murder trial, at St. Lonis, on the 26th, the defendant was placed on the stand in his own behalf. He said his real name was Hugh M. Brooks; that he was born in Chester, England, and that he was 25 years old. He was a lawyer by pro- fession, and had studied medicine, but was not licensed to practice it. He first met Prellar in a hotel at Liverpool, and after on the steamer Cephalonia bound for Boston. They became fast friends, and after their arrival in Boston they agreed to meet in St. Louis and go to Auckland together. Both went to St. Louis at separate times and met as agreed. Prellar was suffering from a stricture, and he treated him for it. Prellar agreed that the operation should be performed, and Brooks administered chloroform to Prellar. Soon he dis- covered that the patient was breath- ing heavily, and that he was dying. Brooks did all in his power to revive his friend, but his efforts were without avail. Even after Prellar was dead Brooks kept up his efforts to- revive him. When all hope was gone Brooks was overcome with horror at his situation. He was a stranger in a strange land and was unacquainted with the laws of the country. In a fit of desperation he placed Prellar’s body in a trunk and then wandered through the streets in a dazed condition. Returning to the hotel Brooks thought only of a way to escape. He searched Prellar’s clothing and found a quantity of money, which he took and with which he bought a ticket to San Francisco and made various reckless pur- chases. He shaved off Prellar’s moustache and put a piece of paper in the trunk read- ing, ‘So perish all traitors to the great cause.” This was done to mystify the authorities and cause delay that would enable him to escape. The rest of the testimony was taken up with a recital of the details of his escape, the journey to New Zealand and subsequent capture and return to St. Louis. The court room was crowd- ed, and the testimony of the prisoner creat- ed a sensation. He denied most emphatic- ally that he had any designs on Prellar’s life, or that he desired to injure him in any way when he administered the drug.

This statement differs materially from that made by him to the detective at the time of his arrest and which is the prin- cipal evidence against him at the trial.

The merchant does not require to keep a large stock on hand swelling its price with interest, for the factory is an immediate source of sup- ply to him at the cost of a postal card, or at most a telegram. He loses nothing, therefore, from being overstocked. The article is a staple one, for which there is as constanta de- mand as for wheat or flour, and the merchant can therefore, sell it at a minimum rate of profit.
