Bible students often express amazement at the scope of the laws of Israel. as set forth in the first books of the Bible. Not only are. there laws governing svt‘ry aspect of civil. moral and spiritual behavior. but also laws with respect to mercy and kindness towards the un- fortunate. the poor and widows.

Iii Igviticus 19.9 and 10. God commands the Israelites to leave the corners of the fields unreaped and the fallen fruit of the vineyard on the ground for the poor and the_ transients.
