Must the Prince of Wales Col- lege Go?

Sir,—A short article appeared in the Patriot newspaper, a few days ago, under the above heading. In that article it was insinuated that your correspon /ents were inspired by the Government, because they made some favorable comments on Mr. Ferguson’s lecture. Ndw that lecture called forth favorable comment both from the friends and foes of the Government. Even the Patriot editor, bota on the platform and in his paper, referred to it in compli- mentary terms, Wor myself I can assure you that I do not know what the Govern- ment’s, or any member of the Govern- ment'’s intentions are on the subject. Why should the friends of the College be s0 sensitive on the question. If the institu- tion is what they elaim it to be; if it can be shown that the Gollege exists for the greatest good of the greatest number, the people will not grudge the money it costs, if, on the other band; it is shown that a great deal of what is taught in the college is rather a hindrance than a help in the struggle for existence, then the college, svoner or Jater, mustygo. The Government of this Island pay abaut two-thirds of their ordinary revente for the purposes of educa- tion. In this respect I believe they are ahead of any country in the world. If the amount of money, or the greatest. portion of it, was spent in teaching our youth how to become good and useful citizens of the Island, few would object. But when it is spent on such an edugation as lead our young men to choose professions and occu- pations for which there is no scope here, it is worse than useless. Perhaps, after all, the most objectionsal feature of our educational system is the time and energy expended by teachers and students, on what is called a classical education. If the same time and energy wasted on them was devoted to learning the practical duties of life, they would be far bettey equipped for its struggles. ’

J imagine that the historian of the future will record it ag something wonderful that, although the people of Prince Edward Island were not behind others in general intelligence in the latter part of the nine- teenth century, that they had the curious custom of paying a large amount of money every year to Professors who did nothing but teach their children janguagés that had not been spakén ‘by any people for thous- atids of years.
