Seizure or Lopsters.—Mr. Francis Stanley, Fishery Warden, to-day seized a cartload ot small lobsters that were being sold on the Market Square, and very properly had them sent out and distributed amongst the inmates of the Poorhouse.

Rats.—In the Boston police court, a few days ago, a man was tined $30 tor shouting rats” ata Chinaman named Chin Whang. The paper from which we extract the above states that the man was a Prince Edward Islander, and adds that it will be quite a while before he will give any more Chin Whang to Boston Chinamen.

Tae Fisnery.—The fish have been very ‘scanty ” this year—and no wonder. A large fleet of seiners is on the watch for them. Within the last few days afew good catches have been made. A correspondent at Mal- peque, writing July 12th, says that a large number of seiners were in that port seeking shelter, and that the schooner James and Ella took 100 barrels on Tuesday. Several schools of mackerel were seen.

Founp os THe CowcatcHer.—On the ar- rival of Conductor Rhodes’ express train at Lansdowne one morning last week, according to the Pictou Standard, a section man ob- served something white on the ‘“‘cowcatcher’ of the engine. In walking to the locomotive, to his astonishment he found it was a beauti- ful little lamb lying down. He lifted it off very gently and the little thing walked away uninjured. It was picked up on the road from Gleagarry to Lansdowne while the train was going at full speed.

He picked one up, fire and al!, and threw it down stairs after his fleeing Fortunately, his aim was poor, and no serious damage resulted. These facts were brought out during a successfu) suit for di- vorce, instituted by the wile, they being part of the mother-in-law’s testimony.

Cricket.—Late English papers state that a unique game of cricket took place on the Paddington Recreation ground recently, In which a team of actors from the Savoy and Haymarket theatres, played against an eleven composed of actresses from the same theatres. Broomsticks were used as bats. The gentle- men won the match by two runs. ; :

A match between the eleven which will play the Truro club on Tuesday next, an all-comers, will take place on Victoria Park to-morrow afternoon, at two o'clock.

Caprourep AT Last.—Says the Farmer : Some time ago, T. J. Clarke, Esq., of Sum- merside, missed a sum of money from his cash drawer. A week later, while the book- keeper happened to be out of the office for a moment or two, a larger sum was extracted, and on Mon tay last the sam of $40 was taken; in all $70 had been stolen. Mr. Clarke’s sus- picion had been raised against a boy who fre- quented his premises, and when the $10 was stolen he charged him with the theft. At first he denied it, but finally admitted the crime and agreed to restore the $40, which he did The rest he had spent. The boy was ar- rested, aud on Wednesday was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.

The Times learns from Rome that Cardi- nal Moran has had frequent interviews with the Pope on the Irish question and that he has impressed the latter greatly showing thet it is not good policy to inter. fere with the polities of the Irish, who, he pomts out, have great power in the Colo- nies and in America. The Times says that the Cardinal's visits will be that the Pope will remain silent hereafter, refraining from admenishing trish Catholics.

The immigration returns for tbe half year just ended show 84,000, against 70,000 for the same period last year ; and 40,000 actual settlers, against 36,000 last year.

Hon. Messrs. Costigan and Bowell are the only Cabinet Ministers at present in the city.

The Canadian imports from Great Brit- ain show a falling off during the past half year of sixteen per cent., principally in cotton and worsted goods. The exports have also declined thirteen per cent., being principally in live stock and flour.

A Big Blaze. Aupgena, Mich., July 12.

It was not till after midnight that the fire which broke out yesterday was under control, Over two hundred buildings were burned, and 1300 persons are homeless. Nine-tenths of them are workingmen and most have no insurance. The losses on these buildings will exceed $200,000. Over three million feet of lumber was also lost. One woman was burned to death, and three others fatally.

The Last Meeting.

Hatrrax, July 12.

The last meeting on the eve of the battle in Cumberland was held in Amherst to- night. It was addressed by Hon. Mr. Fos- ter, Josiah Wood, M. P., and J. T. Bul- mer. Mr. Foster figuratively mopped the floor with Mr. Bulmer. Mr. Dickey’s election is predicted by a large majority. The Colchester Liberal-Conservatives meet to-morrow to nominate a candidate.

Steam Dredge Sinks. Harirax, July 12.

The steam dredge, George McKenzie, working at Ballentines Cove, Cape George, Antigonish Co., sank during a heavy gale yesterday. She lies ona sandy bottom and will likely be raised without loss. The crew were saved. One man, Andrew Jeans, was badly injured by a blow on the forehead.

Mining Disaster.

Lonpon, July 12.

A despatch from Cape Town, Africa, says the DeBeers coal mine at Kimberly caught fire yesterday evening, entombing 800 men. It is believed 500 persons perished including Mr. Lindsay, manager of the company, Many of the victims entombed are white.

Wrynirec, July 12. Greenway has secured 33 out of the 38 seats, leaving Norquay with a following of four. Norquay was elected for Kittonan by a majority of four.
