Nortnwest Crors.—A few days ago the Minister of Agriculture received a despatch from Prof. Saunders, who is at Brandon. Professor Saunders says the crops are excel lent, the straw being as far advanced as at the game period last year.

An expert is at the mine to examine into the quality of the ore taken out, The owners of the mine have much faith in the value of their property. The Homestead Affair.

Prrrszure, Pa., July 20. The day of reckoning for the Homestead strikers has begun. The murders that were done in the fearful battle which was fought between them and the watchmen sent by the Car- negie Steel Co. to protect its property are to be avenged. To-daySeven warrants were issued for the arrest for murder of men whom secretary Lovejoy, of the com- pany, swears wero of the mob that took part in the battle. To-night the first of the seven, Burgess McLuckie, who was to an extent the counsellor of the mob, is locked up in the Alleghanny county jail. The other six will be in custody by morning. This is only the beginning. One thing is

certain, very few guilty men will escape.

The United States and Chili.

W asuineton, July 20.

The Secretary of State has announced that an entirely cordial and mutually satis- factory settlement has been reached be- tween the governments of the United States and Chili respecting the indemnity to be paid by the latter on account of the as- saulc of the crew of the Baltimore. Seventy-five thousand dollara in gold will be distributed among the families of the two men who lost their lives and to the surviving members of the crew who were wounded.

Rumored Resignation.

MONTREAL, July 20.

The Witness publishes the following despatch dated Ottawa, Jaly 19: “It is probabie that Lord Stanley will place bis resignation in Lord Salisbury’s hands before the British Premier leaves office. This is not mere conjecture but the belief of those attached to the GovernoreGeneral’s office. His Excellency has been engaged during the last week putting thiags in order in his ¢ffice on Parliement Hill—a thing he has not done since he took cffice, four years ago.

The envoy treated the offer as an insult. French intrigues, it is alleged, guided the Sultan. Diesy, July 18 —A sad drowning acci- dent occurred last evening at Valley Mulls, owned by Captain N. B. Raymond, three miles from Digby. Raymcnd. with his six- year-old son, had been out for a few hours, and in returning the child was some dis- tance behind the parent. A short time after arriving home Raymond noticed the absence of the lad, and on going in search of him found his body in the pond aoa | the mill, A bruise over the eye showed that he had fallen from the bridge, striking his head against a log, and it is supposed while stunned and unable to call for help was drowned. This is the second son Cap- tain Raymond has lost by drowning in almost the same spot within a few weeks, and the parents are distracted with grief.

Toronto July 18.—The hundredth an- niverssry of the establishment of represen- tative government in Upper Canada was celebrated at Niagara, Saturday, under the auspices of the Pioneer and Historical As- sociation of Ontario. It was participated in by about 2,000 people, who cheered themselves hoarse in their enthusiastic ap- probation of the patriotic utterances of the distinguished speakers who addressed them. Among the speakera were Lieut.- Gov. Kirkpatrick, Sir Oliver Mowatt, Dr. Ferguson, ex-M. P., and Ovl. George Taylor Denison. In his address Sir Oliver Mowatt strongly oppused the idea of an- nexation.

Montreal, July 18.—A great amount of comment was causad to-day by a well- grounded report that Mr. Bruneau, of Richeliew, Mr. Deslisle, of Port Neuf, and Mr. Fauvel, of Bonaventure, all three sup- porters of Mr. Laurier, have signified their intention of resigning their seats and retir- ing from public life. They aver that the party prospects are quite hopeless both at (Quebec and Ottawa, and as the Government did not increase the indemnity, these pat- riots will serve their country no longer at the old rates. They likewise state that at the last party caucus held at Ottawa, Mr. Sutherland, of North Oxford, grossly in- sulted Mr, Laurier by stating that if the party had a leader from Ontario he would not get down on his knees and beg an ad- ditional five hundred dollars from the tories.
