into the hands of the English, gives a graphic account of the filthy condition of the prison at Cairo. He says thumb- screws were pit ov him during the jour- ney from Cairo to Alexandria; at the latter place he was thrust into a prison filthier than the one at Cairo, and was swarmivg with vermin; he was robbed by the jailrs, and then put on board a vessel for Smyroa, but was smuggled ashore at Peravs by the aid of an Arme- pian officer of the ship. He thinks there are 9,000 innocent men in prisons such as he describes. If the man’s story be true,the conduct of Arabi and his subordinates, is another instance of ** mau’s iuhumanity to man.”

Beautiful weather, lar.e audiences, impressive ser vices, end hendsome contributions, greet: his wew effort. The day was remarkabk ‘s one of the finest of the season, aud the wilding was much spoken of as one of th eatest of the Island village churches vhich it is—which enabled not a few, from . distance, to enjoy a pleasant drive, an ee aud hear for themselves. At each © the three services (half past ten o'clock, norning ; three o'clock, afterncon; ane seven o'clock, evening) the building wee most uncomfortably thronged and large unmbers could not gain admission, Peop!: had come from various parts of the Islan’, aud the various denominations had more oi ess of their members present, Catholics, Byptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, an Episcopalians mingled together to see and war what was to be seen and heard I was certainly a day of thankfulness and re- jeing for the Methodists.
At the morning service, precisely at half past ten, the Rev. Mr. Cowperthwai « sounded the first words of public worship, by commencing the dedicating service se
weseribed by the Methodist Church of Canada, The Rev. E. Coary (Baptist) dlered a prayer, and the Rev. Prof. Bur- wash occupied the pulpit. The Hymn: used for the occasion were the Gd57th GG2ds and 6G71st. Mrs. Jabez Lea pres'd d at the organ. The musical part of the cervices was of a high order, and the anthem

Professor Burwash chose for his text, Deuteronomy, 29th chap., and 29th verse:
‘ The secret things belong unto the Lord our Ged; but those things which are re- vealed belong unto us, and to our children tor ever, thar we may do all the words of his law.” The sermon displayed much lepth of theught. The speaker dwel largely upon the urysteries of religion and nature, and the bounds set to human en- quiry, and then opened up to his hearers the revealed truths of Chmstianity, as re- yards ‘heir personal salvation. The Pro- tessor is a speaker who rivets the attention -f his hearers. The sermon was an earnest and eloguent one. He possesses remark- able powers of el cution, especially dis- played in his rendering of poetic compvsi- tions, an elecution, however, which is somewhat marred by uneasy, ungraceful and nervous gesticulation; but, at the sam» time, could not mar the truths he ex- pounded. One could imagine the pleasure et listening to bim, from a wrtten sermon; for as a reader he excels. At the close of sermon, the remainder of tae *‘ dedicatory service was accomplished, taken part im by the Revs. Messrs, Teed, Cowperthwaite snd Buorwash, together with the ladurs of Church. Mr. Tred is the appointed minis- ter of the Discrict.
At three o’clock the Rev. Mr. Cowperth- waite presided at the services, and preached from the 24th chap. of St. Luke, 13th, 14th and 15th verses: ‘‘And, behold. two of them went that same day to a vil- lege called Emmana, which was from Jerw- stlem about three score furlongs. And they talked together of «ll these things which had happened. And it came to paxs that, while they commuped together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.” The sermon was a heart- burning, earnestly impressive, soul-stirring one, breathing throughout a sacred influ- ences, gathered into living realitiea—rhe realities of faith—which made men feel as much in the company of the Master, as did Cleopas and Simon. The evening service—the largest congre- gation of all—was presided over by the Rev, Mr. Burwash. He wished to ‘‘ have # plain and easy talk” with his hearers, and founded his discourse upon the 23rd Psalm. Many who heard the ‘* seczets” of the morning, were visibly impressed by the glorious ‘* revelations” of the evening. He fairly revelled in the sublime comfort and unutterable sublimity of the truths laid down in the Psalm, and old and young listened with great attention,as he breathed ferth from his heart word after word foll of life, pointing upwards to the Christian’s home, where they dwell in the house of the Lora for ever.”

Financially, the proceedings were a suc- cess. I have not learned the exact amount collected for the building fund, but heard it was over two hundred dollars The Church cost about six thousand doeliars. and about one thousand remains to be made up. It is built to seat 350 of an audience. — Com.

A CASE, unusual in occurrence and peculiar. ly sad in its details, has recently engaged the attention of a Coroner’s jury in Quebec. One day last week a ten-year old son of Sr, Timothy Shea, a provision merchant of Quebec, was taken to the surgery of a Dr, Kussell to have a tooth extracted. It was necessary to put the little fellow under chloro form, and before the drug had taken effect so as t» render the pat eat inseusible, dangerous symptoms presented themselves and in spite ot the use cf restoratives death ensued in about two hours,
