GENERAL LAURIE’S RECEPTION.

General’ Laurie received a splendid reception in Shelburne, for which he is the Liberal-Conservative candidate. A despatch says:—

The | requisition was presented to the general by Hon, N. W. White, Q. C., who accompanied the presentation by a powerful address, elicit- ing hearty applause. The general's speech was an excellent effort, being as superior to the diatribes of Mr. Robertson, with which the electors have been nauseated ot late, as gold is to brass. During the hour and forty- tive minutes he employed in his remarks, the large audience who listened to them, were charmed by their pith and effect- iveness. Not an offensive term was applied to his opponent, and the house resounded with applause when the general expressed the hope that when the poll closed on election day there would be no person in the whole county who should have reason to regard him as an | enemy. There were about four hundred per- sons in the hall and hundreds were denied ad- mittance for want of space to hold them. The people of the western, eastern and central dis- tricts declared by the ovation accorded to the ! general to-day that they consider the-candid- ature of General Laurie an honor to their county, and will be proud to record their votes for a man universally respected for his | talents, his patriotism, and his moral worth.” |

Another Successful Islander.

Says the Antigonish Casket: On Sun- day, the 9th inst., after Mass, a numerously attended meeting was held for the purpose of taking steps preparatory to the finishing of the interior of the new Catholic church at L’Ardoise. The unanimity with which those present without a single exception, volunteered to contribute towards the good work is another proof of that lively faith which is the happy inheritance of our own Acadian people. Their desire is, evidently, tu have the work done as soon as possible, and in such style tou, as to compare fayor- ably with the very finest churches in the diocese. Tenders have been called for,

He is now advanced in years, and unwilling in future to undertake heavy con- tracts. Mr. McLellan, when quite a young man, some forty years ago built the churches of Pomquette and Creignish in this diocese. Afterwards he went to the United States where he worked and studied for many years, 2nd while there he even took instructions under Keily, the cele- brated American architect. Then he re- turned to his native Island, where for fif- teen years, he worked for Bishop Me-

Intyre, during which time he — built or finished some of the finest churches in the diocese of Charlottetown.

Among others, the churches of Lot 11, Palmer Road and St. Andrews were built by Mr. McLellan ; so, too, was St. Josephs Convent, Charlottetown, and many other buildings of the same kind in different parts of the Island. It was he who finished the interior of the magnificent church at Tignish, after which he built and finished the large and beautiful Convent and Glebe House of that parish. While his many friends in P. E. Island will be glad to hear that Mr. McLellan has fully sustained in Cape Breton the reputation he enjoyed at home, the people of L’Ardoise ara no less proud <o feel that their own parish church, though the last, is by no means the least perfect and magniticent of-his works.

The Old Guard and the New.

The Toronto World says Sir John’s old guard is like Napoleon’s—-always ready for | the fray ; Mr. Blake has his old guard too, | au inheritance from the late George Brown —both being composed of veterans who have stuck to their parties through thick and thin all their lives. Then the World asks; ‘‘But what of the new guard—the two hundred thousand or more new votes that have been counted in under the new Dominion Fronchise 7’ Well, Sir John has shown that he fears not to face the. new guard. In the coming battle, not one. of them will be disfranchised because of | any act of the Premier. All who have | proven their right to vote may. Sir John’ fought the Grits in Parliament for three months that this might be. Mr. Mowat | acted differently. His young guard, many | of them, never got into the field at all. | They were kept back because the elections | were precipitated in such haste that the | lists under the enlarged franchise could not | be completed, and the young men in many constituencies were deprived of a right the law should have secured to them. .The young guard in the elections of to-day is the creation of Sir John Macdonald’s | liberality. Not one of the tens of thou- sands who compose it would have been on the electoral lists but for him and his friends in Parliament, and of the result of his appeal to them he has no cause to fear.

—_—— an Oe -——- The Montreal Carnival.

Preparations for the great Montveal carnival to be held from Feb. 7 to 14th, are pragressing favorably. ‘This year the castle is of an entirely new design, enclosing an area of 14,000 feet to the tower rising over 109 feet. Within its walls will be an ex- tensive exhibition of the agricultural and other products of the Dominion. The attack on the castle anu defence by the garrison is the finest spectacular scene to be seen anywhere in any part of the world. Grand ice structures will be erected in various parts of the city. The Montreal! Hunt Club will throw open the kennels | (said to be the finest in America) to visitors. The diferent museums and conservatories wilt be free for the week, An Indian vil- lage and lumberman’s camp will be found in full operation. A full dress ball will be given at the Windsor Hotel. Horse races will also take place on the ice, and a grand concert will be given by the snowshoers costume. The city will be illuminated by electric light, and firework displays will be given every evening.
