Y.M.C A.—There will be an informal opening reception at the Young Men’s Christian Association on Friday evening at 8 v'clock. All young men, young in years or spirit, are invited. There will be music, gymnastics, refreshments and a good social ume. No eharge or collection.
St. James’ Concert.—Attention is called to the excellent programme of the concert to be held in St James’ Hall to-morrow (Thursday) evening under Mr. Earle’s direction. Mr. A. L Rice sings Gounod’s celebrated song, ‘* Nazareth,” and his brother, Robert Rice, will sing ‘‘ The Death of Nelson.” The price of admiasion ia only 26 conts, and a very enjuyable even- ing is promised to all who attend.
Concert aT SUMMERSIDE. —The concert held in the Market Hali, Summerside, last evening, was one of the best ever given there. The choruses, duets and vocal solos were all exce!lently rendered, and the large and ap- preciate audience was more than pleased. Mr. and Miss Earle, Messrs. Fred Davies and Knight, of this city, took part. They — in high terms of the kind manner in which they were received by our Summerside friends.

Temperance Concert —The concert in McLeod’s Hall lsst evening under the auspices of Prince Edward Division, was very successful, The programme was carried out ina manner satisfactory to everyone present. Mr. C. B. Warren read “Light from Over the Range,” in excellent style. The other readings and recitations were very well given, and the singing was good considering the youthfulness of those taking part. The tableau “Love, Purity and Fidelity,” was nicely arranged and well- carried out. Miss Wadman deserves the thanks of all forthe great pains she took to make the concert a success,

Poamistic SaLtvarionisTs —An exciting encovater occurred at Digby, N.S, a few days ago, between a Salvation Army cap- tain and an ex-convert by the name of Winslow. Winslow had been a strong Sa!- vation Army man, but failing to see the point of the argument advanced by his spiritual teachers that be should give up the use of tobacco, rebelled when told to abandon it. The Army captain, happen- ing to see him enjoying a gool old-fashion- ed smoke, ——T told him to hand over his pipe, and on Mr. Winslow object- ing in language to suit the occasion, tried to take it from him. An exciting scene followed. Victory hovered first over Wins- low, then over the captain, and fiaally alighted on the shoulder of the former, when he, picking up a hammer, struck the gallant captain # stunning blow, which ended the affsir forthe time. The event furnished groundwork for numerous elo- quent addresses, of a highly improving nature, in the barracks.

Laurier, who is stopping at an hotel here was visited by Pacaud yesterday. The Con- servatives claim that they are on the track of a scandal that will simply astound the people of Canada, and that not a little of the corrupt and boodling tranfactions have been brought to light. It is claimed that the money that went to the Maritime Pro- vinces during the last general election will be traced from its origin to its destination.

Lonpoy, Jan. 18.—In consequence of the prevailing epidemic of influenza here, the projected m'litary feature of the funeral of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale has been abandoned, it being feared that exposure ot the troops in the inclement weather might result in a general attack of the disease. It is deemed that the health of Prince George of Wales is not anfliciently robust to allow of his exposing himself in any way and he will not attend his brothers’s funeral.
