Ducks are not favorites on farms, for the reason that so many believe they must have running water or a pond in order to dowell. In many places where the ducks are kept they are inferior mongrels, not likely to be profitable, and they are very destruc- tive. Ducks do not scratch up the garden, but if a vessel of water is left where they may get at it, they will soon scatter it and make a mess of it. If it is muddy weather and they can have access to the walks and porches about the residence, they will socn make you wish there wasn’t a duck on top of the earth.

If ducks areto be kept on the farm at all, itis worth while to have%the best. They cost but little more in the first place and the profits will be much more satisfattory. Pekins seem tu be the leading variety and they are very

good for feathers which is something that is seldom ever taken into consider- ation where dncks are kept incenent- ally. Ducks will produce their proper | quota of fertile eggs on solid food alone although their natural food is vegetables. They will not and do not object te a littie animal food in the shape of fish, frogs, pollywogs, etc., found at the brook, or in puddles and swales, where flags and other similar vegetation grows. It is not gererally known by farmers that the duck unlike the hen, has no crop—the passage duct leading from the throat direct to the gizzard is very small compared to the size of the bird. This is the reason it does not thrive on hard food alone. There is no place for the hard food to go through the softening stage as is the case with birds having a crop.

Ducks havea very foolish way of dropping their eggs inthe water, and following a brook or river into neigh— boring farms ; unless they have suitable quarters and regular attention, they will give a great deal of trouble in this way. Notwithstanding the general dislike to ducks by farmers they have a_ great many qualities to recommend them on allfarms. It matures early and duck- ling is a very good addition to any re- past.

They are good feeders, hence their growth is rapid, and if the time it takes to get them ready for market is con- sidered, they consume no more than other fowls. If ducks are properly managed they get their full growth in four monthes and may be marketed in August.—Wisconsin Farmer.

In the very hot climates eggs will not keep long fresh, and as the test applied tothem by the seward of a great sailing vessel affords rd4ther an interesting experiment I will describe

New Dominion Dairying Co.

The Aunual Meeting of the New Dominion Dairying Co., will be held

on its own axis. It waslaid aside as fresh, and another tested till the basket was emptied. He said that un- less the egg was fresh it would aot make the curious movement which I flave tried te describe. It is an inter- esting experiment, and can easily be tried, but when performed by our steward it was both comic and pictur- esque. The solemn Oriental, with his ringed ears and toes, the snowy, or yellow brown eggs, and our burly broad shouldered steward, with his jolly English face, made up a picture not to be forgotten. A. O.
