the death of the Rev. Edward Anderson, ID. D. Dr. Anderson was born at East (Point, Lot 46, in 1821. ‘Communication with the Mainland.

The Moncton Times reports: A well at- tended meeting was held in Tait’s Hall, Shediac, last evening tc take action looking to improved harbor accommodation and better steam service between taat place and

Summerside. G. Harshman, Esq., was called to the chair, and Dr. White was ap- pointed secretary. A series of resolutions which we are unable to publish this moraing were framed by a number of leading citi- ‘zens, and ably supported by clear and con- vincing arguments. Messrs. Hannington and Stevens, M. P. P’s., who had been in- invited to be present, spoke warmly of the importance of the project as it had been presented by the different speakers, and they promised all the aid they could render in tavor of the needed improvements.

A correspondent of the Times remarks that: ‘* The agitation now going on in re better steam service between Summerside and Point du Chene, cannot fail to attract the attention of ship owners and other capitalists, to the fact that one of the best paying services on the continent is and has been shamefully neglected, and that there is an opening for a most profitable invest- ment for any new company who will take hold and maintain a proper service on this route. What is wanted is a_ small, swift, strong boat built to contend |with ice, and one that will make the ‘run in from two to two and a half | hours and fitted for passengers, mails and lexpress goods. Only such a boat should re 'celve any assistance from the Government, ias the freight will look after itself and pay ;any company to put on and maintain boats to do the freighting. If the Government will not take hold and maintain this ser- | vice in keeping with the requirements, ‘they could scarcely refuse to guarantee a ‘suitable subsidy t» some new company who i will agree to so maintain it.” ee

Concert at North River.

ON the 26th ult., according to notice, the choir held their concert at North River. The levening was tine, the sleighing good, and | pleasure-seekers for miles around came tu hear the far-famed North River Choir sing. There- fore, when the choir took their place on the platform, they had the gratification of seeing pefore them a packed house—the largest con- lgregation that had ever greeted them ona similar occasion. The Rev. F. D. Davison was called to the chair, and the large congre- gation were hushed by a call for a chorus en. titled ‘‘O come, let us sing.” The programme | consisted of solos, duets, choruses, recitations, lreadings snd dialegues, and took two hours to ‘earry it out. Everyone was delighted, and _ the concert was declared a grand success. We jwill not particularise, but the encores and deafening applause that greeted several of the solos and duets must have been very gratify- ing to the singers. Invitations have been re- \ceived fora repetition of the sane in other} ‘places, notice ot which will be given in due | itime, to enable any who failed to hear it at! | North River to enjoy the grand masical treat in another place. ’

A Derective In Trous._r.—Detective Skef fingten visited Campbelton a few days ago,

{and while in the town called at the Pioneer of-

fice and demanded that the editor apologize to him for something that had appeared in the paper. This the editor refused to do. A row ensued, taken part in by the detective, the editor and the printers. Chairs, sticks, mal- lets and other weapons were freely used, and the detective was ejected. The editor has since sworn out a warrant for the arrest of the detective, and the case will shortly come up for trial. . -

A FLOURISHING CONGREGATION. —The Guardian reports that the ‘roll call” in the Baptist Church in this city was largely at tended on Wednesday last; and says: The response indicates hopeful, healthy spiritual life, and loyal attachment te the cause in this city. Eight men were baptised into the fel- lowship of this church on Sunday morning. The communion service on Sunday was largely attended and of more than usual interest.
