She sailed for Sammerside last night and returned this f renoon. She will sail for Halifax this afternoon.

To Take Tas Porato Bro.—A friend called at this office yesterday with a bit of needed information in connection with that scourge of the farmer—the potato bug. He said the best mode he had as yet seen for taking the bug was with ao ordinary tia pan and a piece of wood or a shiagle. By holding the psn closely under the plant and giving @ sharp blow with the shiugle on the opposite side almost every bug will be thrown into the pan. This ia mach better than picking them off one by one.

Gotp.—Another rich stroke was made at the Annand gold mine st Montague on Friday last, the gross receipta from which will foot up between $1,000 and $2,000. One piece of quartz, about the size of a sugar bowl, contained in all probably five hundred dollars worth of the metal. The plates will be cleared up to-day and it is also expected thata nugget will be un- earthed to-day or to-morrow asthe nugget earth is now being encoantered.—Halifex

Norte is changed in the position of the Province of Quebec Lottery by the action of the Senate, which suppressed the amendment aiopted by the House of Commons relating to the lotteries. In other words the law remains as in the past.
The Province of Quebec Lottery will con sequently continue to apres aa before in virtue of the rights it holds from the local legislature Furthermore the federal law concerning the lotteries will not come into force before July lst, 1893.—Quebec Mercury, July 12th, 1892.

Royal Engineers to be Sent to St. John’s.

A cable despatch was received from London yesterday by the military authorities here, ordering a company of royal engineers to be sent to St. John’s, Newfoundland. will blow down all dangerous walls and reze parts of buildings.
The President and Vice-president of the C. P. R. Company are coming to Halifax to inspect the terminal facilities here. Ministerial Visit—Fatal Accidents

There were two more fatal accidents yes- terday. Dr. Dufour fell off a wharf at Hochelaga and was drowned, and a painter named Lafortune fell from a scaffold and was killed.

Mrs. Geo. Grant, an insane woman, has been sent to the ssylum after stabbing her husband within an inch of his life, and choking two of her children until they wera unconscious.

WasuinetonJuly 19.—The house to-day adopted an amendment to the Sundry Civil Appropriation bill, making it unlawful for an officer of the Government authorized to make contracts, or any officer of the dis- trict of Columbia to contract with any per- son, firm or corporation which employs Pinkerton detectives, or other association men, as armed guards, No employes of euch agencies are to be employed in any government service or by an officer of the district of Columbia.
Rome, July 19.—The province of Rav- igo, in northern Itsly, was swept by a ter- rific cyclone to-day. An enormous amount of property was destroyed, and it is believ- ed many lives were lost. The village of Polezelis, seven miles south of the town of Ravigo, containing nearly 4,000 inhabit- ants was almost completely wiped out of existence. Mony villages were buried in the ruins of their homes.
Pesta, July 19.—One hundred and eighty reapers, men and women, employed in Bebar, Hungary, struck to-day for an increase in wages. When their demands were refused they seized a wagon loaded with cota. Their employer summoned the gen d’armes, and the strikers threatened to burn the farmer's house and lay waste his fields if he did not comply with the de- mand. They also threatened the gen d’armes if the latter interfered. The in- spector commanding the gen d’armes or- dered the men to fice on the rioters and they fired forty-t'v rounds. Twelve men and women were killed and many wounded before the mob were driven from the place, <<
