The Coniferal or cone-bearing evet- vreens, the oldest of trees, were the first on the list, including the white and red (or resinous) pines, the biack aud white spraces, the hemlock (used in our sidewalks) the balsam fir and the American larch (here usually, but erroneousiy cal.ed ‘‘juniper’’) both used extensively for fence poles, the white cedar or arbor vilec, growing prin- ctpaily in the swamps of Prince County, the ‘‘ground” juniper, and the American yew, familiarly known as ‘‘ground heme

The lecturer also mention- ed several minor trees, such as arrow-wood, or vieburnum, elder, witch hazelandsunach, The value of timber to Canada is shown by the fact that $23,000,000 worth was ex- ported last year. The lecture, which was tuil of useful information, and, evidently, the result of extended observation and reading, was brought to a close by a elo- quent peroration, in which the lecturer dwelt upon the necessity of preserving our furests and woods, for the sake of beauty, as well as as for economic purposes, point- ing out, that as forests disappear, so also do brooks, and the land becomes parched and starved. The atmosphere where trees grow is cooland agreeable, respiration is easier, and the exhaustionof excessive heat never felt; while in winter the rigor of the weather is checked by the woody growth. At the conclusion of the lecture, a hearty vote of thanks, moved by Mr. Bain, and
