Position of Women in Ancient Germany.

The ancient Germans—famous for their almost ferocious love of liberty— notonly respected, they even reverenced woman, above ail the other nations of their time. Tacitus, in his celebrated Germina, makes a very high comment | on this peculiarity, and on the German «haraeterin general. Thisdeservesthe morecreditas it refers to a hostile nation. He Says that the Germans ascribe to women something holy .and_ prophetic (sanctum aliquid et providum), that they consult women on all quostions of peace and warfare, avd fi llow their advice According to him, women held no only the place of compzaniont to her huspand—she even held the dignity of priestess and prophetess, of whom Veleda was the most celebrated. The art of healing and dressing the wounds

of the warriors was practised by the women of ancient Germany, a fact which also hoids good of other na‘ions of antiquity. It is only in modern

times that their right and capacity for this art has come to be questioned.

In the feudal ages this r -vereance for woman was carried over the world-re- nowoed ‘ Minnedienst” a curious immi tution of the of the trouba adours, But not only the floe and noble ladies in their castles enjoyed this rela- tively superior position, the very uuns in their cloisture combined the grace of women with the learnicg of men, and even rivalled them io contesting for the laurals of the poet. Roswitha, ‘che nuo of Gandersheim,’ was the most re- nowned of them. She lived in the tenth century; and although her dramas are composed in Latin, she is termed the great German authoress, and, as some would say satirically, the first German “blue-stocking.”’

There were a great many more learn- ed women io Germany during the time of the Renaissance. Many noble women and patricians were conversant with the Latin and Greek languages and _litera- tures,aS was the case io other countries. A celebrated Italian lady, the honer- able Fulvia Olympia Morata, who fled from her country on account of her Protestant tents, was installed as pro- fessor at the University of Heidelberg, where her grave is shown to the tourist up to the present day.

Another noble lady. Argula von Grumbach, carried on with Luther a lively correspondence on religious mutters ; and the great reformer him- self did homage to womanhood in the very selection of his wife, the gentle and virtous Katharina von Bore.
