The Cadre is the official newspaper of the UPEI Student Union. 2,000 copies of The Cadre are printed 10 times per semes- ter. There are meetings open to anyone Mondays at 4:15 in room 213 in the W.A.Murphy Student Centre. The dead- line for submissions is Thursday at mid- night. The opinions expressed within The Cadre do not necessarily represent the views of UPEI or the UPEI Student Union Inc.

Editorial 1: Back into the swing of things

I made a shocking discovery a few days ago. In regards to my age; when I came to UPEI, I was a bright eyed 17 year old... strait out of high school at the Rural. I've been here for a while, but good God I'm 22 now.

How the hell did this happen? Beside me on my desk there's a half full cup of some evil red goo. Vodka and jelly bears makes 80 proof jelly bear goo. But in no way am I claiming that boozy jelly- goo is responsible for me being here since I was 17. But it's a way of life that is so tied to PEI; I really enjoy my life of going to school year after year and drink- ing and partying... but at some point I'll have to give it up. But it's just so familiar and comfortable, yet I have to face the reality that six months after I graduate, Student Loans is going to be knocking at my door. And I don't think that five years of student loans can be brought under control by working on PEI and living from paycheck to paycheck. Yet life is what you make it (to some smali extent), and I think by being Editor-in-Chief I've chosen a good way to spend my last year at UPEI and on PEI.

This year at The Cadre should prove to be one full of a lot of work, but also of a lot of fun. I have big plans for the paper this year, but first I'd like to explain one thing that The Cadre is, or more exactly, what it isn't.

If you look on our logo, it say UPET's Student Paper. And this is wrong. While we are paid for by the students of UPEI, our logo should actually read

the Student Union Building The Cadre has had more contact with the Student Union then was ever imaginable. And one couldn't imagine a better relationship, we're all in the Student Union providing a needed service to students, and it can't be denied that The Cadre, The Nexus Yearbook, The Wave, and the Student Union need to work closely together.

But it also can't be denied that in the UPEISU policy manual the UPEISU has rights to publish two pages of what- ever they want. It is un-editable by The Cadre. It is the centre spread, which is reserved for colour advertisements. Is this problematic? Possibly. Will it be a prob- lem this year? Not likely.

So now you know that The Cadre is a part of the SU, and we share many of the same ambitions as the rest of the SU. This year you'll see big ads for The Wave. Will you see an ad for Myron's? Not likely. There will be ads for beer, cell phones, and careers in the Army. Hell, even a cigarette company may throw its logo on our paper. The Cadre is a business. Our pages are for sale. And with an election coming up there will be political ads. But make sure that you don't think that whomever has the most ad space is the party of favour in the SU. But there are some pretty big Liberals up here. I would never count myself as one, but if they want to adver- tise then they are more then welcome. Political parties are allowed to advertise, but The Wave's competition aren't... our goal is to enlighten the students of UPEI.

Souris and there's rumours (and paper) pointing to an adverted professors’ strike this summer over raises and the ability to fire professors on tenure. This year there's still no varsity men's or women's rugby teams, or varsity men's volleyball teams. There's always news being discussed at council meetings. There's always things being said on-camera. It's our job to find and figure these things out.

So we hope to scoop a few sto- ries. What else will appear in this year's Cadre? Well, from people I've talked to this year, there seems to be three types of people. There are those that thought last year's Cadre was the best ever; something that you could send home to ma and pa. Then there are those that thought last year's was total shit, and that two years ago had the best Cadre ever; full of inside jokes and pictures of the Cadre staff. Then there are those that say: "The what? We have a student paper?"

Taking in mind these three groups of people, I hope to give the read- ers a paper full of real news (like last year), yet also have a dose of funny antics (like two years ago), and the com- bination hopefully will encourage readers to tell their friends about their Student Newspaper. We'll have to see how it goes. I mean, hell, I'm Editor-in-Chief of a uni- versity paper and I wouldn't feel happy spending a year here and not getting into a little trouble. I'm thinking along the line of funny-pranks-kind-of-trouble. Not run The Cadre into the ground trouble. And maybe I'll get some letters to the Editor
