As the judge for this year's competition,
I will consider all the slides submitted, regardless of the subject or location, but I would encourage as many submissions on a P.E.I. natural history theme as possible. I hope to give pointers on how to improve your pictures as well as general guidelines on nature photography with particular emphasis on the use of light.
I would encourage as many photographers as possible to submit, even if it is only one or two slides. It is always very interesting to see other pe0ple's work, whether or not they are prize winners.
Please submit up to 10 slides in a slide box labelled with your name, address, and phone number(s). Drop your slides off at the Bird's Eye Nature Store. Write "Attention Marion Copleston" on the envelope.
ENVIRONMENTAL CALENDAR
Mid-March to late March: The grain eating group of birds should return to the Island. Look for Common Grackles, Song Sparrows, Red-winged Blackbirds, American Robins and Great Blue Heron.
March 12 - April 6: About thirty minutes after sunset during the last 2 weeks of March, Mercury will appear as a 1st magnitude star 5 to 10 degrees above the western horizon. Venus will be located about 20 degrees up. (Astronomy, January 1991)
April 2: Mr. Jean Ouellette will treat Society members to an evening on amphibians. The Society's meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Farm Centre on University Avenue.
April 6: The Island Nature Trust's Annual Fund Raising Dinner is set for this day. Tickets are on sale now and the profits support the Trust's very
“active conservation program. Come and join the fun. Contact the Trust at 566-9150.
April 7 - 13: National Wildlife Week. Consult local papers for a list of events.
Starting Mid-April: The P.E.I. National Park will begin hosting 6 open houses across the province to gather public input into concerns, management issues, and other matters concerning the management of the park.
April 20: Astronomy Day.
April 22: Deadline for submission of slides for the Society's Annual Slide Show and Competition. Refer to the article in this newsletter.
Early May: Watch for the return of the terns to the Island.
May 7: The Society's Annual Slide Show and Competition will be hosted by Marion Copleston. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Farm Centre.
May 25: The day for the Bain Birdathon. If you wish to join the fun, contact Rosemary Curley at 838-4309.
June 2 - 8: National Environment Week.
