A Lame Horse.—Sudden lameness in the hind leg which disappears and re- turns indicates ocealt spavin, which is inflammation of the inner part of the hock joiut. It is a sericus disorder, as it usually ends in bone spavin and lame ness unless it is well treated. Use cold water bandages a few days, then apply strong liniment to the hock joint once a day. Let the horse have slow exercise, but do not drive it. Moderate work is better than standing still.

Sweet Apples for Horses.—No_ stock is more fond of apples than horses. A few given every day at this season with or after their grain will improve their appearance. Sour apples should not be given horses when fed whole oats, as the two may cause sore mouth, especial-

if the oats have a tough skin. Sore mouth from eating whole oats is the

reason why many well-fed horses can- not be kept in good condition. Such horses will do better on meal mixed with moistened hay.

Disease of Potatoes.—The destructive disease in potatoes known as the potato rot is caused by a fungus which appears either in the stalk and leaves or in the tuber first and then rapidly spreads to the other. It is marked by a black ap- pearance either in the stalk or the tuber. When the tuber shows black streaks or patches, or the stalks and leaves blacks

blotches it is a sure evidence that this disease is attacking the crop. Unfor- tunately there is no remedy sorit. The

potatoes may be dug at once as they will make no growth, and those which are free from the disease stored in bins and sprinkled with lime. The diseased ones may be used for stock if they are first boiled to kill the spores of the fun- gus, which is akin to the smut of corn and wheat, It is useless to try to grow potatoes largely fora few years until the parasite is starved out by seed- ing to clover and grass for a few years.

Charcoal for Fowls.—Charcoa! is an antiseptic and may often be caken as a medicine with much benefit, to relieve the stomach from excess of acid and to promote digestion. Itis a mistake to suppose that birds and animals in a state of nature cannot procure charcoal and would not use it if they could. Fires oceur inthe wilderness every season and charred trees are of common occur- rnce. Deer and birds eat this charcoal very freely, and pigs roaming the woods are eager forit. When asa substitute. So that it is natural for animals to have charcoal supplied to them, and for poultry it is a good plan to give them wood ashes, from which they will pick the charcoal, or tochar ana ear of corn in theoven for them now and then. Pigs should have all the chareoal they will eat: it is an antidote to sour stomach and intestinal diseases.

Washing Butter.—A new method of

washiog butter has, it is stated, been patented in Germany. The particles as soon 98 gathered in the churn (about a tenth of an inch in size), are removed to a centrifugal machine, the drum of which is pierced with holes, and lined with a linen sack that is taken out with the butter. The machine is set in rapid motion, and the buttermilk begins to escape, a spray of water is thrown into the revolving drum, washing out all the foreign matters adhering to the When the wash-water comes away clean, the washing is stopped, the revolution being continued till the last drop of water is removed. The dry butter is then taken out, moulded, and packed. The product, it is claimed, has a fioer grain, flavour, and aroma, and much better keeping qualities than when prepared for market in the ordinary way.— Maine Farmer.

Dressing for Harness.—Harness that are continually used and are liable to become wet from rains and to be moist- ened by the sweating of the animal, ro- quire to be dressed with a preparation of oil to maintain a pliable condition and to preserve the life and strength of the leather. Below we give a_ recipe that is employed as a government har- ness dressing, viz :—Take one gallon of neatsfoot oil, two pounds bayberry tallow, put ina pan over a moderate fire; when thoroughly dissolved add two quarts castor oil; then while on the fire stir in one ounce of lamblack : mix well and strain throngh a fine cloth to remove all sediments. This affords a good dressing and should be applied as often as the harness requires to be kept soft.
