In- deed, with its two dairy schocls, well equipped and handsomely endowed by a paternal Government, she has stolen a march on her big western neighbor. All this time, I am airaid that we in the Pro vinces by the sea have not been sufticiently alive to our interests; we have not appreci- ated at their proper value our great natural advantagrs, in a fine climate, in rich soils, in abundance of clear, sparkling streams of water traversing every section, in grazing lands unexcelled, and, above all, in closer proximity for onr products to the markets of the world, than the people of the Far West. Let us look at the farmer or the stock raiser of Ontario. He has to provide continuovsly for the improvement of his permanent future, a thing almost unknown in this country, (although our land advance in price, and we have adopted a better system of tillage, we shall have to do so), by the sowing it down with the a liberal quantity of grass seeds, sometimes ss much as fifteen pounds to the acre. In the absence of mussel mud and rock weed, he has to pur- chase his commercial fertilzers, and yet he can carry his stock, or its products, over more than a thousand miles of land carriage, passing by our doors, be undersells us in England.’ We are comgeiled to come to the conclusion that his is the better system of farming, with which he combines a due regard to the leaks and losses that would arise in order to avoid them, which generaily makes the difference between profit and loss. It has been demonstrated in that Province that twenty per cent additional in the quality and quantity of products will alter the whole character of dairying; for instance—that is turn it from a loss to profit—to more than a living profit. What is more to the point, it is becoming evident to the ‘intelligent, in all the Provinces, that our bad system of tillaze, in one respect from the preponder- ance of grain raising and of exporting the raw material from year to year, through which our virgin soils are being rapidly impoverished, must soon bring us face to face with the restoration of these soils, or to go into bankruptey. This is a problem certainly with some of us that demands im- mediate settlement, and we are fully per- suaded that high class dairying lies at the root of the matter. What is high-class dairying, then? It means the selection of better stock. Two-thirds of the dairying cows in Europe and America, it has been computed, are kept at a loss. They eat their heads off perhaps eight or ten times during the period they remain in their keeper’s possession. It means more than this, for it must result in good care and proper management of the stock : saving ot time, and time is money ; and in the em- ployment of mechanical appliances, and finally in the establishment of cheese fac- tories and creameries. We have the pres- sure of a greatly enhanced demand at home and abroad, of a paying trade in these pro- duets, and of large and increasing benefits to our system of agriculture. . A. ©. Although drinking is not so prevalent in this village as it was before the adoption of the Scott Act, still we do not thank Me- Kienen and Reilly for it. A public temperance meeting under the auspices of Hunter River Division was held

‘kind ever held at Hunter River. The hall, |which will ordinarily seat one hundred and fifty, was over-crowded; while many were compelled to remain outside. The meeting | was opened with prayer by Rev. W. P. | Archibald. The programme, which con- i sisted of speeches from Rev’ds. John Good- will, George Steele, W. P. Archibald, and J. A. Dafoe, each followed by appropriate selections of music, was well executed. The expressions of the speakers were character- ‘istic of their zeal to promote the temperance ,cause. Four religious denominations were represented on the platform, yet here they ceased to differ, to stamp out an evil com-

mon to all. A few amecdotes were related by some of the speakers, showing the extent to which

the ingenuity is sometimes taxed to satisfy

the craving appetite for drink. But that

told by one, of a husband outwitted by his

wife, is perhays more worthy of mention.

After failing in ail his contrivances to con-

ceal a cask of rum, he had for his own use,

from his wife, who sometimes indulged in

the liquo’. As a last resort he suspended

it to the vefters in his barn, where he con-

sidered it beyond her reach ; but judge of his amazement, on again arriving at the

scene, to find the contents of his cask de-

posited in a tn on the barn floor, but the

cask itself stil] there. Stretched by it lay

The Short Line Railway. The St. John Sun says: Col. Snow, who has been a pronunent figure in the proposed railway from Deer Lake on the New Bruns- wick railway around the head of Moosehead Lake has completed arrangements for the building of the road from Oxford to New Glasgow, and on to Louisburg. This will be gratifying news to the contractors and others employed on this section, as they will receive the moneys due them. Col. Snow will leave in a few days for Oxford, to re-commence the construction of the road. It is expected that the greater part will be completed before the fall of 1884. As forthe short line to Montreal, it is expected that Messrs. Fellows and Balcom will commence the survey of the line between Edmudston and Quebec in a few days. Both gentlemen are now in the city. Messrs. Brown and Smith are to survey the line around the north of Moosehead Lake, but it does not yet appear positively who is to take the line to the south of the lake. The other surveys mentioned will commence in a few days. From the above, and from other indications, there will be a lively reason of railway building in New Brunswick during the summer.

The Fish Market.

Boston advices reports that the trade in fresh fish has been fair, and, with an ample supply, prices have ruled low. There have been thirty-nine arrivals with fresh fish, and three of them bruvght in some 60.000 lbs. of halibut with their other fish. Some fresh mackerel have been forwarded from the weirs, and have sold as bigh as 10c. The mackerel from New York have ranged at 2}c to 5c. Cod bas been in good supply, bas also been haddock, but there has hardly teen sufficient halibut. Oysters were quiet at previous prices.
