Why, it may be asked, cannot our ‘em sts discover some pleasant and poisonous disinfectant? Why are c under the necessity of substituting intolerable smell for a bad one? 1e Aaswer is that nothing but poison- us substances can be good general dis- intectcnts, as the dangerous matter which itis the aim of disinfectants to vestroy is chiefly organic, of which too, tuough of course in a far higher degree, the vital parts ofthe human being ‘onsisis. Of disinfectants, charcoal is perhaps the least objectionable; it is neithes dangerous nor mal-odorous; but though extremely valuable asa deodorant, its usefulness as a disin‘ fectant must be capable of destroying the lower forms of organic Jife, some of Which constitute disease; and the provinces of the chemist is to find out that substance which is most destruc- tive to these lower organisms, and least dangerous and objeciionable to map. Carbolic acid best answers these re- quirements, and on this account has recently come into extensive use.
