STeaMERS Movements. — The St. Law- rence left Point du Chene this morning at 8.45, but as the straits are reported full ef ice yet, it is uncertain when she will reach her destina- tion. During the run ever to the Point on Thursday she sustained some damage to her paddle wheel.

The Princess of Wales arrived at Pictou from this port this morning, and left on re- turn at 1 45 this afternoon.

Easter Market. There was a large attendance at the mar- ket to-day, and sales were lively. The display of beef was, as it always is at

Easter, more than usually good, and was, of course, the centre of attraction. Messrs. Blake Bros.

had several splendid carcasses on sale, the total dead weight of which was upwards of 6,400 lbs. The feeders were D. McCallum, E. McLean, W. Laird, themselves, and others. They also had a carcass of mutton that weighed 136 lbs. Mr. R. Stockman was the feeder. Saunders & Newsom had four carcasses of beef, the aggregate weight of which was about 3,000 Ibs. ; and a car- cass of mutton, 101 lbs. The feeders were Messrs. McKinlay, McKinnon and Clarke. George Thorne had three carcasses fed by Messrs. McNeill, McEwen and Irving, which dressed 2,226 lbs. He also showed a carcass of mutton weighing 102 lbs. _H. McGregor had two careasses which aggre- ated 1,400 Ibs., the feeders of which were fessrs. McCallum and Match. John Drake’s two carcasses weighed 1,350 Ibs. They were fed by Francis Bain and R. Drake. %S. Gay had three carcasses fed by William Pippy, Pope Mills and James Pratt, which dressed 2,040 lbs. Jenkins Bros. showed the carcass cf a cow fed by Joseph Haley, that dressed 800 lbs., and also a ¢arcass of lamb fed by Michael Haley, weighing 25 lbs. W. Sellers had three carcasses, fed by A. Mutch, Isaac Essory and Thomas Cameron, aggregating 1,740 lbs. Barret Henderson's two car- casses, one of which was fed by himself and the other by John McKinlay, dressed 2,515 lbs. Patrick ‘Trainor showed two carcasses, fed by Messrs. Henderson and McDougall, which dressed 1,297 lbs. Stephen Brown and Henry Balls had three carcasses, aguregating 1,960 Ibs. They were fed by Thomas Vessey, Abraham Brown and Henry Ford. The other butchers also hada very good quality on hand. Below are the prices :—

New York, April 19.

The biggest and fiercest tire New Yorkers have witnessed in this generation swept the east bank of North River clear to-day from 59th street to what would bo 65tu street if the street ran tothe river. It destroyed more than a million and a half dollars’ worth of property belonging to the New York Central Railroad, at least half a mil- lion doliars’ worth of stores, lard, flour and the like, belonging to other persons, notably N. K. Fairbanks, the great Chicago lard merchant. Two big elevators, A. and B. Vanderbilt system; the big brick building stretching from 59th to 60th street, occupied jointly by Fairbank Lard Refinery and the Rosseter Store, and the dock property of the New York system, 59th to past 65th street, are wiped out. Henry Benning, (single), a workman in Fairbank’s refinery, was killed by jumping from the third story window, and a number of others were in- injured by jumping from windows. Rumors were flying round all the evening that a number of workmen were caught and burn- ed in Fairbank’s factory, but it is impos- sible to verify them. Piers and pierheads connected with the elevator system are badly damaged and rendered temporarily useless. Some freight they contained was destroyed. Three immense vats containing 200,000 gallons of melted lard and cotton seed oil, when the flames reached them exploded, throwing the burning fluid in all directions. The employes had not a chance to save themselves save by jumping out of the windows. Many estimates place the loss far above $2,000,000, some as high as $4,000,000, while the ‘police estimate is $3,000,000.

“Green Goods” Again. Orrawa, April 19.

Some time ago one Roots, of New Jer- sey, flooded Ontario with letters offering ** green goods” on the usual terms. One of the earliest letters was sent to the De- partment of Justice and resulted in nego- tiations with the American postal authori- ties, whereby all letters to Roots’ address from Canada were forwarded to the Do- minion authorities. Lots of these letters are now in the hands of Major Sherwood, Chief of the Dominion police, and as under a statute of last session it is criminal matter to offer to purchase any ** counterfeit token of value” it looks as if quite a lot of Can- adian greenhorns are in a bad box. If the presecution of one Holden, in Ottawa, started a few days ago, results in convic- tion, other prosecutions will speedily fol- low. The Department of Justice is de- termined to make this trade so dangerous that not even the most gullible will dare bite at such Yankee bait.

There was a cricket match on Parliament grounds this afternoon. L. H. Davies carried off the bowling honors, and-Mr. Dickie did some grand batting.

The debate on the Atlantic mail subsidies which was suspended at 12 o'clock last night, will be resumed to-morrow, and may last some time. Mr. Skinner had the floor when the debate adjourned.

The Plot Discovered.

The Prefect of Police has discovered the existence of a Nihilist plot to assassinate the Czar, while attending the funeral of Gen. Panicker, Minister of Roads. The Czar was warned not to attend the fuyeral. A number of persons charged with being implicated in the plot have been arrested. The Nihilists intended to use dynamite.

New York, April 11. All the steamers which passed the course where the Danmark lay when last seen have reached port. Some of the sailing vessels have not yet reported; but little hope for any knowledge through these is held out. “The general impressien that now prevails is that the passengers and crew have reached the Azores. Lower California’s Fisheries. San Dreco, Cal., April 17. The International company of Mexico claims the sole control of the fisheries of Lower California, the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf waters. The authorities at En- senada will commence an active crusade against and confiscate all vessels found fish- ing in the proscribed limits.
