Trans-Canada Trek: Nova Scotia

Before Crossing over into Nova Scotia, we had lunch in Moncton, New Brunswick. Moncton is quite a nice city, from what I saw of it, and there seemed to be a lot going on. There was a motorcycle parade down the main street while we were there. Whether or not it was a planned parade is another thing altogether. It didn't seem to be.

When we made our way into Nova Scotia, and stopped at the infor- mation booth, the first thing we heard was the jolly sound of bagpipes! There was a fort right there, but we didn't go in. It sounded as though there was some kind of festival hap- pening inside the fort. From the infor- mation booth we were better able to plan the rest of our trip through Nova Scotia and into Prince Edward Island.

We decided to stop at Truro for the night so that we could see the tidal bore come in from the Bay of Fundy. The idea of a tidal bore is real- ly interesting; when the rising tides meet the slower moving outgoing river water, the tide forces the river to suddenly change direction and a wave

forms heading upriver. But the actual tidal bore, at least the one we saw, was just that: boring. We should have continued on into Halifax instead. As it was, in order to see the tidal bore we had to make a decision for the next day: Halifax or Cape Breton Island. Cape Breton won.

The drive to Cape Breton was extremely beautiful. We drove up the southern route to Sydney and camped at the Mira River Campground there. We went to see Louisbourg, but we were almost too late. We arrived there at about one hour before closing, which didn't give us a lot of time to look around, but we managed to at least get the basic idea of the fortress. There was an interesting museum there about the archaeological process to rebuild the fortress. And at the end of the day, they loaded and fired a canon out over the water. It was very loud.

The next day, we had to stop in New Glasgow and had a look around there. It is a very quaint little city. And then we drove to catch the ferry to Prince Edward Island. Out trip was suddenly very soon coming to an end.
