The Times thinks that it is opportune, now that King Leopold is in London on business connected with the Congo territory, to pro- test against the ‘‘overweening ambition” of the Congo Free State.

The Times adds: ‘*The Belgian flag cannot

We should have the greatest possible pleasure ‘ in assisting himin any way in our power, but we fear his search for a supposed family property is a hopeless one. He does nor even know in what county in England the estates are supposed tu lie, nor is the name to be foundin any county directory, or in the usual books of reference. Weare familiar with cases of this kind, being freqently asked to assist persons in Canada or the United States to recover en- | ormous properties in England owing to ad-

large estates supposed to be lying vacant for years, only waiting for an heir to step in, and fabulous sums of money (generally several millions sterling) awaiting a claim- ant in the court of chancery. Of course neither the vacant property nor the funds. in chancery are forthcoming when searched for.

The parties who hope to succeed in these ventures seem quite unaware that in Eng- land the period within which an action for the recovery of,land can be brought is by statute fixed at twelve years from the time when the right of action arises, though under certain exceptions! circumstances, such as the Junacy or infancy of the claim- aut, the period may be extended to thirty years, which is the absolute limit. Absence beyond the seas has not since 1879 afforded any protection to claimants, or prevented the statute from *‘ running” against them and barring their claims.

With regard to funds in chancery, we know as a matter of fact that there is hard- ly a fund lying there unclaimed exceeding a few hundred pounds in amount.

It almost seems a pity that some way
