REV. AND BELOVED PASTOR,—The an- nouncement made this morning of your intended departure from amongst us for a trip abroad, bas fallen upon us as a surprise, bearing with it mingled feel- ings of pleasure and regret.
We all feel that the duty of giving ex- pression to those feelings in a full and adequate manner would require more time and organization than is now at our disposal, but as you leave us on the morrow we hold you responsible for the insufficiency of our material recognition of your worth, to which we all wish now to bear testimony, though in an impromptu and hurried manner.
Glancing backward over the last twenty three years of your pastorate at Fort Augustus, we see sO many evi- dences of your ability in the administra- tion of the affairs of the parish, that we find it impossible to even hint at them all, in the course of this short address; but it will be only necessary to single out and sample a few of the greater ones to tell you, that we know your worth. You came here to find a parish burdened with debt, and church and church prop- erty in an unfinished condition. You courageously undertook the device of ways and means to lift off that burden, }andthis device succeeded. Next you set to work to put in order the interior of the church, which undertaking was also broughttoa successful issue. So that the decorated interior of the old Fort Augustus Church withits magni- | ficent furnishings outrivalled many of | the foremost edifices of the Diocese.
All this work was under your guid- | ance accomplished so smoothly that we | really had to ask ourselves time and |

morning of three years ago, was herald ed abroad that our dear old church was laid in ashes and the work of a quarter of a century was undone.
To say the least this was disheartening news for us. We all knew how dis- | coureging this calamity must have been to you, Dear Father, and we proudly put it forward today and we secondéd every move you made to replace the old | church.
We knew this was our duty; but we did it willingly, because we knew you so well and felt that your’ genius ;} could devise means and your vigorous | energy could carry out the plans for the | tremendous task before us.
Allis now accomplished and we can proadly look upon St. Patrick’s brick | church as the architectural gem of the diocese of Charlottetown. What is bet- } ter still is that in the short period of three years this structure, erected at a cost of $14,000, is practically clear of debt. We fuily admit that this great achievement is due in a very great meas- ure to your skilful management and holy zeal.
Should not this siege of trials and labour for the good of Fort Augustus entitle you to avacation; and therefore be the occasion of that pleasure, which is ours in wishing you God- speed, an enjoyable trip and a safe return. These traits of the zealous priest so manifested in the above recounted facts, and your many other deserving qualifications have endeared you to us, and justify the re- grets that the announcement of your in- tended absence of some months make us feel to-day.
You will be privileged to visit the venerable shrines of Europe, and to offer up the adorable sacrifice in the sanc- tuaries of Rome. Think of us there, kind Father. and be assured that our prayers will go out for you each day, that you may be benefited in every par- ticular aud come back again to your old parishioners to live amongst us, and to administer in your own zealous way to our Spiritual wants.
In saying ‘‘Good-Bye,’’ we ask you to accept the accompanying gift as a feeble expresson of our love and esteem for you.
