A novel method of feeding plants grown in pots ie credited M Georges Truiffent, a Freoch horticulturist. The needs of the livir g plant are first ascertained by analy- sis, woen the salts necessary for a certain number ot months are weighed out and formed into a “pil” by enclosure ina metal covering, aad the pill is planted in the pot. The salts slowly ditfuse through the meta) without acting on it, such regu- lation of the thickness of the metal and solubility of the salts beiug said to be possible as ‘o giveaprll to last either three or six months. It is not clear what advantagee are expected to justify the expense of periodical analysis, but it is stated that large, well-colored plants are grown in pots of iess than half the usual size.

Much of the danger attending the use of acetylene, according to Prof. Vivian B Lewes, may be due to the making of the calcium carbide from impure materials. An appreciable - amount of sulpbur, phosphorus oreilica compounds in the coke may give rise in the resulting acetylene to phosphoretted hydrogen and similar gases liable to spoutaneous ignition and giving off on combustion products injurious to health aud fabrics. The pure acetylene can be decomposed abruptly into carbon and hydrogen by con'act with a detonator or by heat, the dauger, however, being slightly below two atmospheres of pressure and greater as the pressure is ia~ creased.

The successful plating of aluminum with copper bas been announced bya German named Wachwitz. Manv objec tions to aluminum are thus overcome, und the copper coating is #0 thiu as not to add materially to the weight, while the union of the two metals is so perfect that plates may be rolled or stretched without peeling. The copper-covered wires may be plated with silver or gold.

Minerals containing calcium have been found to be brilliantly phosphorescent afer exposure to x-rays, those containing etal lic ores being as a rule son -phorpborescent

Five or six years ago so-called “dark meteors” were obeerved by M. du Celliee Muller to cross the moon's disc. An- uouncements of this discovery were received with much scepticism by astronomers some of whom suggested that the dark bodies were birds in flight, others tual they were seeds floating in the air,and ull others that they were particles of dust in the eyes of the observer. Subsequent observatione bave proven beyond all doubt, if we may accept a3 conclusive a recent paper to the British Aetronomical Society by Mr. Fritz Hopman, that the objects are resily bodies moving in apace outside te earth’s atmosphere. The size of theee bodies varies greatly, most of them ap- pearing Very small but two having leoked ae large asthe lunar crater Tycho, aud their apparent velocity also is very different for different meteors, the passage across the lunar disc having occupied from a fraction of a second to three seconds. The dark meteors have been seen passing before the sun, too, in considerable num- ber.

Curious results have been obtained by M. Guillaume in experiments with alloys of iron and 4 to 45 per cent of nickel, the object of the tests being to determine tie metal most suitable for measuring in» struments on account of permanence in length under yarying temperature. A rule made of an alloy with 25 per cent of nickel,and annealed, continued to elon- gate when keptata lower temperature. An alloy containing 22 yer cent of nickel expanded on heating coneiderably more than ordinary steel, but with 37 per cent of nickel the character of the metal was eutirely changed, the alloy ecarcely ex- panding at all.

Vaccinatination has received fresh en- dorsement from the late severe epidemic of small—pox at Gloucester, England. Dr. Sydney Coupland reports a total of 1979 cases with 434 deaths, the mortality having been 40.8 per cent among the unvaccinated and only 9.8 per cept among the previcus- ly vaccinated. Only 3 cases, moreover, of the 507 accounted severe were among the vaccinated. The severity of the epidemic is attributed to the large number of unvaccinated children.

The best color for school exercise boards is etatcd by an authority to be cream white withordinary crayons of sky-blue, and extra colors of cavary yellow and a clear dark green. Black is the worst of all for the eyea,

A bruuze arquebus, sapposed to date from ihe end of the sixteenth century, was found to contain somewhat more than 80 per cent. of copper, about 9 per cent of sulphideof copper, about 95 per cent of tin ani traces of lead, andthe metal was in an excellent state of preservation. Such was the caxe also, it is recalled, with the b mze guns of the English veesel Mary Rowe, which were recovered after being under water 292 years. Cast iron ehot found at Brest, however, hal come*o soft they could be cut with a knife; but wrought iron objects were a litile better kept, having a core of sound metal under therust. The eame effects on iro.i were noted in the cannon of the Royal George, after being sunk onlv 62 years.

While alchemy has been revived in the United States, the divining rod bas gained a fresh hold in England. The mystery of this instrument is explained by Prof. M. E. Waaeworth, of the Michigan School of Mines, who bas often shown his classes that if any tongh twig fork is grasped with the plane upward, the franchixe en ering the clenched bands from the sides farthest apart, the twig will bend downward when- ever the grasp is tightened. The harder the grip the more 't must curve. Water or no water, mineral or no mineral, the result mu-t always be the same when the canditions are fulfilled; and it can be eae:ly understood, Prof Waisworth adds, how an ignorant operator may deceive himself and be perfectly honest in supposing that some occult force, and not his hands, forces the fork downward.

Color-Learing is found by Dr. W.S. Colmar to be of twokinds. In one « transparent colored film seems to appear in front of the person on hearing certain sounds, as those of the vowels, musical notes, or particular musics] instruments. In the second group each letter or word, when spoken or thought of, is brought to view in a characteristic color. Dr. Colman regards the phenom- ena as ‘associated sensations,” analogous to shivering at sight or thought of an accident, or at the raueak ofa slate pencil. wharf is in One of the most out of the way situations on the bay and, there are none bat the class of persons above referred to who believe that it will be of any uae. It is on ths site of an old wharf, and tne public record will show its earning power for the Jast twenty years. It rotted down, aa does many others arourd the bay for want of work.

The railway along here was their death knell. Theharbour isa poor sand bar witb and old tumbling down breakwater, aod we understand the Dominion author- ities bave refused any repairs. We bave no money to burn. We write this from a disinterested standpoint, having noticed this kind of thing for years in a greater or less degree. Is it not time to cry halt to this policy which is pursued all over the Province. We may well consider whitber we are drifting The sooner that those in authority have back- bone enough to say “no” to this sort of thing, the better for themselves and the taxpaversa. We advise the government to think twice before throwing money away in this manner,
