These liquor dens are much more in-
jurious to the community than houses of
prostitution, and they must be closed up.
—dAs already reported by Thr Ex AMINER, the applications for Sir Leonard's new loan exceeded the amount required bp £600,000, and the loan was obtained at an average of 2s. 6d. in the pound, above the minimum of 91. This is the best loan ever placed by Canada; and commenting on it, the Montreal Gazette says :—
“This rezult is eminently satisfactory, marking a new stage ia the progress of the credit of the country. Ten years ago, in the fall of 1874, Sir Richard Cartwright placed the first Canadian 4 per cent. loan, the nominal price being 92, but the amount actually realized was only about 874 per cent. Four years later Sir Leonard ‘Tilley negotiated a loan bearing the same rate of interest, netting therefore 954, since which time the credit of the country has so great- ly improved that Canadian four per cents. have sold within a few months en the London market at 106. The present issue, realizing something like 4} per cent. more for a 34 per cent. bond than Sir Richard Cartwright obtained a decade ago for 4 per cents., indicates the substantial scowth of confidence in the country enter- tained by capitalists abroad, and may be considered as permanently establishing the borrowing rate of the Bominion at 35 per ceut. The proceeds of the loan are to be invested mainly in the Pacific Railway, in payment of the loan made to the company last session, and of the original subsidy, which is being so rapidly earned.”

A Nomination.
Ir is a little remarkable that amidst all the rumors in circulation about Governors and Judges to be appointed, the name of the Hon. Louis H. Davies, M. P., ex-Premier, ex-Attorney-General, has not occurred to anyone. ‘There can be no doubt that under his administration the Governorship would become a live institution. Mr. L. H. Davies, at the head of the Council Board, surrounded by Messrs. D. C. Martin, D. Farquharson, S. F. Perry, J. R. McLean, Henry Beer and Benjamin Rogers, as his constitu- tional advisers, would be the ideal of a “Great mac in Council,’ and if some gushing, but not very well read, admirer should apply to him Milton’s descriptiou of Beelzebub, no great harm would be done. The question of Arbor-culture, now receiving so much attention, would, no doubt, derive an impetus from Mr, Davies’ management of the Government grounds. A veritable ‘‘upas tree,” planted and nursed under his care and surrounded by the bones of animals slain by its poisonous exhalatious, might serve as a symbol of ‘our glorious system of Free Education.” It might be that a salary ot $7,000 per year would be no inducement to one accustomed, in days goue by, to doing so much better. But ‘little jobs” might still be obtainable. the Attorney Geneial of the Island could take retainers and re/freshers from the Dominion to work against the Island, why cannot a Governor do the same thing? In this way there might be ‘millions in it,’ and if so it would snit Mr. Davies admirably. The appoint- ment could not fail to be satisfactory to the Davies wing of the Grits. The Laird faction could not complain because they have have already seen one of their number a live Governor. As for the perverse and unreasonable Tories, all that could be expected from them would be a “chorus of reciprocal malignity’ (vide Davies’ Great speech in the Com- mons.)

A JEWELRY STCRE IN JEOPARDY.
On Saturday evening, about seven o'clock, the jewelry store of Mr. E. W. Taylor, on Queen Street, was the scene of a miniature riot. A drunken brawl took place on the street near by, and a mariner named Nicholson, who assaulted, or had been assaulted, by a number of wharf laborers, etc., sought refuge in the store. He was
followed by a dozen or more into the rear |
workshop, and the fray was continued. The scene which took place there beggars de- scription; and how the glass cases on the counters of the show-room, clocks on the shelves, and ornaments escaped destruction is a mystery to all who witnessed the melee. When the writer entered the store the procession of cut faces and bloody neses, which passed outward, was truly ludicrous; but as he passed into the work- shop it was more serious. Tables were upset; tools were forcibly removed, and a bunch of humanity ‘“‘rough-and-tumbled over the floor, saturated with water from a bucket, and blood from their wounds. They were hustled out quickly, but one remained—Nicholson. Just previous to the exit of the majority a bottle was fired through the rear window, but did no serious damage. The gang in the rear were told to move off or sowething serious might happen them. They did so; but an inquisitive boy, bound to see all going on inside, mounted the window silland hung on to the frame. Just then Nicholson drew a revolver and discharged it at the window, saying: “‘I must protect myself,” or words to that effect. The boy dropped with incredible quickness, and it was dificult for a time to he did not fall by a bullet womd. Luckly the bul- let passed ont of the window about fifteen inches from the boy, and his fall was no doubt owing to a nervons shock. Nicholson then gave up the pistol, and the police on arrival took him in charge. He was arrzigned before the Stipendiary Mag- istrate this forenoon and discharged. War- rants have been issued for the arrest of the others engaged in the melee.

Tue new National Line steamship America arrived at Queenstown from New York, on the morning of the 18th inst., in six days, foarteen hours and eighteen minutes. A fog prevailed in the lower bay, and she was over an hour passing the bar. She has beaten the record between Sandy Hook and Queenstown by two hours and thirty-nine minutes. The best pre- vious passage was made by the Cunarder @regon last April. She reached (Jueenstown in six days, sixteen hours and fifty-seven minutes. The (Guion liner Alaska had pre- viously made the passage in six days, eighteen hours and thirty-seven minutes. ‘*We have not reached our limit of speed yet,” said a re- presentative of the National line yesterday. “We have room for four more boilers in t»e America, but we don’t think we will need to put them in to beat six days.

THIRD DAY—FRIDAY,
After the devotional exercises the journal was read and approved. Rev. R Duncan submitted the report of the Missionary Committee. It was received. Rev. R. W. Weddall, B. A., read the report of the Conference Special Committee. It was received and adopted clause by clause. A long conversation ensued, in which several took place, relative to the mode adopted for assessing the circuits for the General Conference expenses. At the close of which a resolution was passed referring the whole matter to a new committee to re- consider it. Rev. J. C. Berrie read the Sabbath School report which was adopted. Journal Secretary read a list of Sabbath
appointments. Several brethern were excused from the Conference over the Sabbath. Morning session was concluded
by the Benediction, FRIDAY EVENING’S SABBATH SCHOOL MEETING,
On the platform were Revs. D.D. Currie, J. C. Berrie, Jas. Crisp, W. M. Tredrea and H. J. Thorne, Esq., the Rev. W. W. Brewer in the Chair.
Rev. J. C. Berrie read the report, which expressed thankfulness for the success of the past. There had been an increase in the number of schools to the extent of over 600, Sorrow was expressed that there had been a decrease of 300 learning the cate- chism. He then gave the following figures: 172 schools, 1,199 officers and teachers, 9,621 scholars, 406 conversions, 13,694 volumes in the libraries, $1,098 for wis- sions, $2,558 for Sabbath Schools purposes, and $98.58 for the Sabbath School Exten- sion Fund. He concluded by recommend- ing our own literature.
The chairman made some appropriate re- marks, He referred to the energy of the St. John people in rebuilding their homes, stores and churches. Next to the great supreme command—‘‘Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every crea- ture,” is the equaily divine command— “Suffer little children to come unto me.” He prayed that the smile and benediction of the Master might rest upon the little children on the platform. He also made reference to the beautiful flowers on the platform. Next to his love of children was his love of flowers.
Rev. Mr. Tredrea was the next speaker. His topic was the work of the Sabbath school ceacher. He claimed that most of
the successful workers and ministers in the church came from the Sab- bath school. The first qualification
uf the teacher was conversion to God. No teacher could throroughly succeed without preparation. Next he should be deeply interested in his work. He should know his class and his lesson. Young people necd tobe trained with care. A teacher must come to his work in high spirit. Discretion is reqaisite. A serpent’s wisdom and a dove’s harmlessness were needed. Men differ. The Apostles were unlike. There is the same difference among schclars. D ligence was mentioned as being necessary, All should have something to do. Labor ought to be diviced. Give one part of the lesson to one stholar, and the other to

principle of imitation, Religious instruct- of great dungers. There are many bitter fountains that entice the young. Religious instruction is necessary because youth 1s a critical tune. There are mary instances of short periods of time determining long and indetinite periods. The face of our Lord Jesus Christ is adapted to all the wants of human nature. Ge prayed that God might bless our Sunday School workers. — Atter singing, ‘‘L love to teil the story,’ E. D, Whiteside, Esq., then gave an eddress and a black beard exercise. He pleasure at seeing so many children present. Our mastar used illustrations. Listen : ‘‘Behold a sower went forth to sow,” ‘‘Consider the lilies of the field.” He drew a straight line on the board, then he stated that man and God were virtually one. He cut the line and said this was what there had been done. Next he crew a line through the other at right angles. This is what Christ had done, united man and God by the Cross. He gave several other illustrations. The audience were delighted. It was most interestirg and instructive. The singing was perfect and general. The scholars occupied the platform and the side galleries. lt was the most interesting held for many years at a conference gathering in connec- tion with the N. B. and P. E. I Confer- ence. A collection was taken up in aid of Sabbath School Extension. Benediction by Rev. J. C. Berrie.
