! | Grit “ Home Srr,—In the late election, whenever it suited their purposes at the meetings, the ‘Grits had a great deal to say about Home Rule and Mr. Costigan. Of course Mr. Glad- stone was held up as the greatest and most | liberal minded man of the age. But they al- | Ways very conveniently forgot to tell the ' whole story about the G. O. M, Gladstone. | They forgot to tell their hearers that it was this same Mr. Gladstone who imprisoned Par- ‘nell and other leaders of the Irish party in | Kilmainham jail for simply pleading the cause ‘of Ireland in words similar to those used now ‘by Gladstone himself in behalf of the same cause. Mr. Parnell has never recovered from | the effects of his imprisonment. He went to ‘jail a robust man; he came out with broken ‘health which still clings tohim. Mr. Glad- stone, the English Liberal, be it remembered then, placed the Irish leader in prison and kept him there tiJl it suited his purposes to let him out, This isa fact which we trust Grit orators of the Donald Allan stamp may bear in mind when they next attempt to en- lighten electors on the question of Home Rule for Ireland.

P. E. I. Railway Rates.

' StR,-—As a majority of the people of this Island have decided to send Grits to Ottawa to represent them we must only try and have the affairs of the Province conducted as_ best we can through our present Local Govern- ment. And to begin with, there is the mat- ter of railway rates. Inthe session of 1880, Dr. Muttart and Mr. Hackett brought this question prominently before the House of Commons, but since then nothing has been done in the way of securing lower rates on our railway which, owing to the fact of its being purely a local read, and a crooked and cheap one at that, has no right to have the same rates for freight and passengers as are charged on the lntercolonial. The rates are too high on nearly every article carried over our road. Take, tor instance, the article of wood. It costs per car for wood from New Zealand to Souris, a distance of five miles, the sum of $4 or $3.50 per car load for green cordwood, From Burke’s Road to Souris, a distance of twelve miles, it costs $4.50 per car load, or $4 for green cordwood. Cordwood can be purchased at about a dollar a cord along the line, but there is every little encouragement to poor people to deal in it, as it takes nearly as much to carry it 10 or 12 miles on the cars as is paid for it first cost.

Passenger rates are also too high. Two

class; and return tickets should be issued for second class fare as well as first. I may tre-

Srr,—In reporting the Pownal lectures, a correspondent of the Patriot tells _us that Mr. L. H. Davies is the ‘*‘ idol of Lot 49.” It is surely time that the mission- ary was abroad over Sthere. Such idolatry should be looked after at once. ‘“‘It was a rich treat,” we are told, ‘‘to listen to such ‘an orator (italics are ours) describing orstors.”” After that give us a rest or a ‘clerical cloture.

| The following particulars of the chase of ‘the Vigilant after an American schooner ‘caught fishing inside the three mile limit are given in a special despatch to the Hali- fax Herald. An officer, of the Vigilant | Teports:

| ‘*We sailed out of Beaver Harbor with a good breeze, and ran toward Campobello. We had gone but a few miles when the look-out forward yelled that there was a fisherman, which ‘looked like a Yankee, about six miles ahead, with sails down and boats out. We became convinced that she was within the three mile limit, and was there to secure fish, The pirate had not noticed us, Ourmen were becoming uneasy, and expressed their wish that the blouming craft should be taken to St. John. Capt. McLean was cool and caleulat- ‘ing. After studying the situation, he said : | ** The craft has no right to be in there any- iway. Hove to, she means business, so if that skipper don't give a satisfactory account of himself we will take the whole outfit into port {before night. This tickled the crew immense- ‘ly. The New York Tribune's London special of the 9th contains an interview with Mr. Parnell. In answer to the question, ‘What do you think will happen in Ireland if the coercion bill passes ’ Mr Parnell replied : ‘I hope its evil designs will be foiled. Hitherto a coercion act has always blooded up the landlords to evict, and evictions un- fortunately have always brought crime in their train. The reason that last winter was so quiet was because the landlords gave concessions. The moment my bill was thrown out the Cork landlords held a meet- ing, and Mr. Penrose Fitzgerald, who moved the rejection of my bill in the house of commons, urged them to reduce their rents, so as to prove that my bill was not necded. The cue of the Tories then was to govern Ireland, as they vaunted they could do at the general election, without coercion and without home rule in order to falsify Mr. Gilrdstone’s prophecy. The government supplemented the voluntary action of the Cork landlords by bringing pressure to bear on the refractory rack- renters througli the agency of County Court Judge Currian, General Buller and Cayt. Plunkett, when you add to these exertions the action of Mr. Dillon and Mr. O’Brien in working the ‘plan of campaign,’ the in- fluence of which extended to estates far beyond the radius of those on which it was adopted, you will see what powerful machinery there was in operation to bring down rents, to check evictions and to pre- vent crimes. Now the landlords and the government are on another tack altogether. They have grown desperAte and are fighting for their existence. The government is preparing wildly to coerce and the land- lords to evict.”

A Questionable Practical Joke.

THE MANNER IN WHICH AN ENGLISH LADY OF RANK RESPONDED TO AN INVITATION.

One of the London society papers prints an elaborate stury concerning the unhappy adventures of the wife of an alleged Chica- go pork-packer in her efforts to enter the inner set at Marlborough House. As the story goes, the ambitious woman was very rich and had an endless amount of diamonds and pocket money. It is said that she began operations by making direct over- tures to a titled young matron prominent at the Marlborough House entertainments and standing high on the list of divinities of the new club. This society matron was known in story as Lady B. Lady B. received endless invitations to dinner from Mrs. Chicago, but all of these invitations were declined. After a time Lady B. made a wager with a very high personage—under- stood to be the Prince of Wales —that she would put an end to the invitations and at the same time rid herself of the impor- tunities of Mrs. Chicago. The next invi- tation Mra. Chicago sent to Lady B. to dinner was accepted. On the day before the dinner Mrs. Chicago’s cook left her, but a new cook applied for the place, and as she was recommended by an intimate friend of Lady B.’s, was accepted. The diy of the dinner came, but with it there did not come the honored guest. After waiting for over half an hour the mortified hostess sat down to a delicious dinner with her expect- ant and disappoittted friends. At the close of the dinner there came the piece of start- ling news that the cook hai disappeared and had left upon the dressing-table a note which read as follows: ‘* Lady B. pre- sents her compliments to Mrs. Chicago, and hopes the dinner gave satisfaction.”” It was then discovered that it had been part of the wager and juke of Lady B. to play the part of the cook for Mrs. Chicago, and to display the culinary education received by

her at the South Kensington School of Cookery. This is regarded as a very clever

joke, but it would appear from the story that the vulgarity was not all on the side of the self-seeking Mrs. Chicago.

The Disabled Alaska.

The disabled steamer Alaska arrived at Halifax on Sunday evening, in tow of the steamer Circassian. The Alaska had a thrilling experience. She is 1381 tons net register, commanded by Capt. Patton and bound from Cardiff to Philadelphia with a cargo of 2,200 tons of railway and scrap iron. All went well until the 30th ult., when in lat. 39, long. 62, Captain Patton broke the blades of his propellor. He struck something hard, and thinks it must have been wreckage. Next day the fourth blade broke. Since then he has been com-

Patton says he had a very narrow escape from being lost on Sable Island.

The Neue Frie Presse of Vienna com- menting on the Irish Coercion bill, says it may possible reduce the number of crimes in Ireland, but it will never change the prevailing enmity int a feeling uf loyalty.
