The gunboat Thrush, Capt. Prince George, arrived here this evening after a glorious passage from the Bermudas. The Thrush is one of the smallest gunboats in _the British navy ever seen on_this station. The Thrush will remain in Halifax until |the return of the squadron from Newport.

Sanders Sentenced.

Woopstrock, N. B., Aug. 1. | Judge Stevens arrived here to-day and had the prisoner Sanders, charged with stealing $4,000 from the Bank of Nova Scotia, brought before him. Sanders’ sen- tence is two years and four months in the Dorchester penitentiary.

A Va.vuas_e Discovery.—A vein of alber- tite coal, 9 inches wide, is reported to have been discovered on the farm of Ralph Steeves, Lower Hillsboro, N. B., and is now being in- spected by mining men with a view of develop- ing it. It will be a valuable find, if work- able, as albertite is worth about $23 per ton. Six or seven American and English capitalists interested in Albert County mine deve!opment are expected at Hillsboro on Saturday.

Packep IN Ice.—The Journal says: Forty- one barrels of fresh mackerel, packed in ice, were forwarded to Boston, via Summerside, from Morell. They were carried from Char- lottetown to Summerside in a box car attached to the express, and the work of transferring them from the car to the steamer occupied only three minutes. At St. John the fish were to be re-packed inice. It is to be hoped that this method of shipping will prove suc- cessful.

Surrerines AT Sea.—The Amherst Sentinel reports that a Norwegian ship has arrived at Northport, bringing four sailors picked up at sea in an open boat. They say their vessel, a Norwegian, bound for Shediac, struck an iceberg and sank. The crew cf ten tock to the boats. These four had been drifting ten days without provisions, and when rescued were suffering terribly. Their legs and feet are much swollen, and they are still confined to their bunks in their ship. The captain and five men who were in the otker boat were picked up and landed at Quebec, as stated in our telegrams yesterday.

Sons or Temperance.—The returns sub- mitted at the recent annual session of the National Division of the Sons of Temperance show that at the close of 1889 there were l,- 528 subordinate divisions, the decrease during the year baing 94 divisions. In membership the number was 78,480, a gain in members of 1,185. Nova Scotia stands at the head of the roll for numbers, and Pennsylvania is next. The Bahamas has one Son of Temperance to every 4,229; Quebec one to every 1,621; New- foundland one to every 390; Ontario one to every 382; Manitoba one to every 255; Prince Edward Island one to every 63; New Bruns- wick one to every 52; and Nova Scotia one to every 26. The treasurer's report showed that the cash on hand June 30, 1890, was $2,025, against $3,288 a year ago.

A Narrow Escare.—The Sentinel says: A three-year-old child of George McLellan, of Lynn, Cumberland, fell into the well, in the absence from home of all the family except his mother and an infant child. The house is in the woods, a mile from any neighbor and there was no one to send for assistance. The child came down on his feet, the water being nearly to his shoulders. The mother let down the well bucket which worked with a wind- lass, and told the child to grasp the rope fair-
