The UPEI Lady Panthers im- proved their record to a league best 8-0 on the weekend with a convincing sweep of the Memo- tial University of Newfoundland Beothuks.

Saturday night the Lady Pan- thers roared out to a big half- time lead and coasted to victory from their. Memorial obviously was not ready for the Lady Pan- thers as they were caught flat- flooted for much of the first half. Time and time again Lady Pan- thers flew by their slower oppo- nents for easy baskets.

The Lady Panthers scored ev- ‘ty way imaginable. If the out- side shot was open they took it. If that wasn’t available they went inside to Janet Nichols or Paula Edwards for the easy hoop.

As usual the full-court press of the Lady Panthers helped them to their lead. Turnovers caused by the press were easily converted to layups. The fast break of the Lady Panthers also resulted in Many breakaway hoops. At the

half the Lady Panthers were up 52-20.

The second half was a much different story. Memorial came out and played much harder than they did in the first half and the results were obvious. They were able to cope with the press of the Lady Panthers in a better manner and cut down on their turnovers dramatically.

Although Memorial didn’t im- prove their shooting perchantage much than were however able to get off more shoots , thus more points. On a positive note for the Lady Panthers many of the non-starters saw a great deal of floor time in the second half as the starters were given a much de- served rest.

Even though the Lady Pan- thers only outscored Memorial 40-38 in the second half they still wound up with a 34 point win, 92-58.

Sunday’s game was the same story. Only the way the Lady Panthers achieved the outcome was different.

Memorial actually maintained a lead for much of the first half as they hit their shots and limitec the Lady Panthers to shots fron the exterior. The Lady Panther: slowly whittled the lead away anc eventually took the lead to stay.

The Lady Panthers took over in the second half and pulled away from Memorial who contin- ued to play hard and refused to give up.

The game was just a case of a team being more talented than their opposition. While Memorial had to work and slave for their points the Lady Panthérs would go down the floor and score easy points to demoralize them.

Offensively on the weekend the Lady Panthers were led by Stephanie Smith who scored 16 and 19 points. Paula Edwards scored 10 points on Saturday and 22 on Sunday to go along with a big 16 rebounds. ‘Tracey Bowie alsc contributed with 12 on Sat- urday and 16 on Sunday.
