XNTERESTING STATEMENT

Mr. Campbell says that “without waiving a single item of the three and a quarter million dollar claim, the Liberal Government presented claims for $488 000 increase a year as the minimum increase of sub- sidy which would enable us to carry along satisfactory with a balanced budget?"

This statement is very interesting. The Liberal government got noth- ing in the way of increased sub- sidy. The MacMillan government obtaned 8150.000 annual increase. We are still $288,000 short of the annual increase fixed by lvir. Lea as the "minimum" necessary to alonce the budget in 1930. oovél-n- - ent obligations ‘are heavier today than they were then. Unemploy- v - ent relief, old age pensions, etc., ust be taken care of, and Mr. ampbell says they will not re- udlate such obligations. He also says there is no hope under the White report for any more subsidy from Ottawa. Yet he says it will he a simple matter, by practicing econ-

How could the government have saved this money to balance the budget?

Was he sincere when he charged up the unemployment projects this yearto the current year's aocoun‘: If so, why, in making his financial comparisons, did he not charge the Liberal unemployment expendlturel, incurred in 1881, to the Liberal ac- count. That account was carried over into the following year and it ""thoM , '_' , account, which the Conservatives had to pay for though it was built under Liberal regime at a cost of 831.000 a mile.

Mr. Campbell was frank enough to admit that repairs now being made to the Provincial Billlding "were no doubt very» necessary." This at least is s. refreshing con- strast to some of the misstatements which his colleagues have been making throughout the province.

He dealt with the ex- perimental highway projects in the the same equivocal manner. surely the electors have a right to know what the Liberal policy is wlth re- gard to these undertakings? will they be discontinued in the result of a Liberal victory, or will they and the budget "balanced" notwithstanding. All Mr. Campbell wasprcpared to crit- icise wes "manner" in which the trans-Canada highway project was being handled.

Was he fair when he, said the Bennett government had promised to pay the full cost of this high- way. and neglected to state that the promise referred to a gravel high- way, as in other Provinces, and not a hard surface road such as is now being constructed? The fed- eral ‘ ibution is actually more than would have been received un- der tbe promised project.

Was Mr. Campbell sincere when he said that, the Macmillan gov- ernment "couldn't find any better way to spend $30000 than by haul- ing clay from the Exhibition grounds to the dump?" He knows that this money was obtained from Ottawa for the specific purpose- not of removing clay from the Ex-

Hon. G. Shelton Sharp staged a Brest comeback in his ten minute rebuttal sbcech on Wednesda even- ing at Ellerslie.

Answering the accusation of Mr. Barbour that the present Govern- ment had bungled the finances of the country and that they were the most ‘ s Government since Confederation, and had lost noney in the exchange of New Brunswick bonds, Mr. Sharp retaliated by quot- ing from the Blue Books, that the bonds in question, $57,000.00 yielding 5 per cent interest due 1951, had been exchanged for $58,000. worth of Ontario bonds yielding 1/5 pel- cent due 1958, besides, $1,000.00 in cash. These bonds were exchanged so that the maturing date would coincide with an issue of Prince Ed- ward Island Bonds of $175,000.00 at 5% per cent issued on September, 1922, for fifteen years and clue Sept- ember 1037, How is that for good business?" he asked amid applause.

Mr. Sharp also effectively answer- ed Mr. MacLean's contention that the Liberals were not responsible for the leasing of the oyster areas.

I-Ic received enthusiastic support from the audience when reading fro mthe agreement between the Saunders and Mackenzie King gov- ernments. He , ' ‘ ‘ out that the agreement distinctly said that the Govemment will not grant any ar- eas, except by way of lease. There was no mention in the agreement of public fishing. He was interrupted at this stage by Mr. Maclean, who asked Mr. Sharp to give a single instance where the Liberals had granted any leases but the audience called out for Mr. Maclean to ‘sit down."

Mr. Sharp was cheered by his sup- porters when ignoring the znterrup- tion, he went on to read the nlinuies of an Order-in-Council under the Saunders Gov‘t, when eight of their party signed away the rights of the fishermen for all time, in handing over to the Dominion Government the oyster areas of the Province for private culture and leasing.

The record is there, and "whatever Mr. Maclean says to the contrary you cannot get sway from he truth, which is recorded in the minutes of the Order in Council. (Cheers). The commodlous hall was filled to capacity, many finding seats on the platform and ante-rooms off the stage, '

Mr. William Burleigh was chair- man and presided very impartially. All the speakers received an atten- tive hearing with few interruptions.

HON. G. SHELTON SHARP

A burst of applause greeted-Hon. G. Shelton Sharp, who was the first speaker. Mr. Sharp was in splendid form as he ably defended his Gov- eminent.

Through these unprecedented times of depression, Mr. Sharp said. the Government has been faced on the one hand with people demand- ing eeonom and on the other hand with an insistent demand for Public Works.

laid emphasis on the fact that the Government at Ottawa had given special consideration to this Pro- vince in the matter of highways and subsidy. Moreover, Island gravel and Island labour was being used. The work was being done at $11,000 per mile as compared with $27,000 per mile for the Maclntyre Highway.

NE. HARBOUR

Mr. Barbour confined his remarks to the extravagance of Government cars and that the officials would have to find some other method of transportation. He said the county Court judges could very well take care of the work now being done by the three provincial magistrates, as it is well known they have not more than two months work in the year.

The Attorney-General, he said, was paid 82,000.00 to sit in his office allday. Mr. Myers in his speech corrected Mr. Barbour on the amount of the Attorney-Generals salary, which is only $1,500.00.

Mr. Rogers complimented the dis- trict on its very large attendance and discussed the issues of the day in a very able manner. He pointed out that had the Government not received this money from Ottawa that the Liberals al- making so light of, the taxes would have had to be raised to take cane of the extra- ordinary expenditures and to pro- vide work for the poor.

The Liberal speakers had criticiz- ed the Govcrnment but thisds the closing meeting cf this district, and yet neither of the candidates have offered a. remedy or told us what they could do to improve matters.

MR. DENNIS

Mr. Dennis opened his remarks by saying that the Conservatives had charged gravel to Capital Accollnt as well as the Liberals. This accus- ation was straightened out by Mr. Sharp in his rebuttal, when he ex- plained that the greater part of the year 1931 was under Liberal rule and the Conservatives only charged gravel to Capital Account in their first year. In their four years the Liberals had charged to Capital Ac- count $366,1'l0.34 for gravel.

Mr. Dennis had a good deal to say on the subsidies, that it was a Lib- eral Government that had looked into Maritime rights, and the pres- ent Government was only partly im- plementing the report of the Dun- can Commisslorl when it gave the Province this money.

Voice: "What about that ‘ive cent piece you did not get." (Laughter).

The Liberals who had known Mr. Dennis for over twentyyears as a staunch supporter of his party, must have been surprised at his remark that he was getting away from party politics and that something had to be dons for the best dis- tributlon of wealth in the country. The joint political meeting in Bedeque was decidedly Conservat- ive, l-Ion. Heath Strong, KC, and Mr. 1-lugh F. Morrison receiving the bulk of the applause. Mr. ‘rlleophilus Inmarl presided very impartially. The hall was packed to the doors, many not being able to gain admittance. Splendid order prevailed and all the candidates received an attentive hearing.

Mr. Strong was in splendid form and so ably presented the Con- servative case that Mr. Baker, who had ten minutes rebuttal, found it difficult to reply and cries of "time gentlemen" were heard from the floor. Mr. Strong was greeted with applause as he went into the gov- ernment road policy, citing the splendid work accomplished in this district on the roads siizee this government came in. Answering Mr. Wright's critic- isms on the enforcement of the prohibition law, Mr. Wright accus- ing the Conservatives of promising one hundred percent enforcement, Mr. Strong said they had never promised 100 percent enforcement. But the Conservatives had en- forced the law just as well and perhaps better‘ than the Liberals who had made a poor job of it.

Mr. Morrison made an able speech defending the MacMillan Government and asking for the support of the district for himself and his colleague. Mr, C. C. Baker took up his time criticising the opposition but had nothing con- structive to offer. Mr. Horace Wright speaking for Mr. W. M. Lea, brought up the subject of pro- hlbition which was effectively

E Island: solemnized at noon today in Ryerson United Church, was a marriage uniting two well-known families, when Catherine Maude Josephine Wright, daughter of Mrs. Nina Lowther Wright and the late Mr. J. W. Wright of Bedeque, P.E.I,. became the bride of Mr. George Frederick Victor Hudson, only son’ of Mr. and Mrs. James F. Hudson of Kerrisdale. Rev. E. D. Braden performed the ceremony at which the bride's uncle, Dr. W. F. Wright. gave her in marriage. Wearing a trim travel tailleur of ivory-toned French wool beneath which was glimpsed a white handmade, tailor- ed blouse of triple sheer, the bride chose all white accessories includ- ing a stitched silk sailor hat and pinned to her coat lapel a corsage - of pale pink roses. Later Mr. and Mrs. Hudson left on an extended wedding trip to the south and will reside in Vancouver on their return.

He referred to the Cuban market, saying that the Conservatives are not to blame for the shutting out o! potatoes in that market, but that McKenzie King is not extending the West Indies Treaty to Cuba antag- onized the Cuban people and they raised the duty on potatoes so high as to make it impossible to deal with them. ‘

Furthermore, Mr. Myers said that under Liberal rule the duty on Can- adian potatoes going in to Cuba was $1.50 per kilo in 1929. In March. 1931, $1.36 per bushel and in 1934. $1.10 per bushel, so you can easily see that under Conservative rule the tariff was lower.
