LOST IN

Table Mountain, ia Mukumole coun- ty, California, was ence famous for its goldsbearing gravel, lying beneath a crust of cement, pipe clay and boulders, In 1860, hewever, nearly all the good gravel, it was thought was taken out. Atadepth varying from one to four hundred feet, the ground was honey- combed by passages or drifts, intersect- ing each other in hundreds of places, thus forming a labyrinth only familiar to the miners who excavate the gravel. Many of these drifts are nearly a mile long. Some sre fevel, others raised and full, according to the configuration of the ledge, which in Table Mountain is composed o} slate, intermingled with limestone. Whenever the abandoned tunnels are depressed, water covers the bottom. In some places the roots are sustained by upright props, or herizen- tal beams ; at ethers they are composed of hard cement or pipe clay, needing no support.

The drifts, however, had not been properly worked by their former own- ers —the Invincible Company, and thousands of cart loads of gravel, con- tainiog the precious metal, were yet hidden amony the limestone boulders and between the seems of pipe clay: This fact became known in 1852 to my- self aud other miners in the vicinity, and we therefere formed ourselves iato acompasy, put up sheds, cleared the debris from the mouth of the inclined tunnel, erected a steam hoisting engine, began to dig out the boulders and pipe clay that had slid down from the roof and sidea ef the main drift, and were soon rewarded by finding gravel that fetched from two to twenty dollars a cart=load., :

On Saturday evening, I was sitting in the bar-room of our new boarding house, listening to to the tales of some miners who had lately arrived from Calaveras county. They spoke of long drifts that had been run into a moun- tain near Murphy’s camp. The under- ground foreman of our company said : ‘Oh, the drifts in the Tiger Mines beat yours all hollow. If you like I wiil show you the way through them. We have just broken into one of the aban- dened drifts of Senoro mines.’ The miners, however, declined the offer.

No emotion of the mind is stronger er more lasting than curiosity. I felt an irresistible desire te explore these drifts and caverns, not so much for the sake of finding gold as geologieal re- search. It is a well known fact thut beneath the entire length of the Table Mountain extends the bed of au ancient river, now covered by the forming the top of the mountain. The pebbles among the gravel show plainly that water was the canse of their smooth and spherical form. The direction in which they lie, and the petrified leaves, piec- es of wool, and other objects in the se- diment, indicate the course of the cur- reat. It was written by Mr. Lockhart, of Carn- wath, who attended Prince Charles Edward (the Prince of Wales) as Regent, to Edinburgh and Prestenpans, in September, 1745. He was was so disheartened and disgusted (and no wonder was it) by the Prince and his army re- maining at Edinburgh for a menth, instead of pushing on to London as they ouyht to have done, and weuld have won all if they had done it, that he chased Sir John Cope in his very ignominious flight to Berwick, and sur- rendered himself prisoner to the Elector of Hanover ; afterwards he wrote from London to his wife (left in Scotland) that he had, like
