The active part taken by Protestant clergymen in introducing

the su-called religious element into the recent struggle, has

borne itsevii fruit for the time ; but just so surely as liberal |

principles were won before the Island was blessed by the pre-

sence of those worthies, so surely will they continue to gather

strength long after a returning sense of duty, or the remon-

strances of the members cf their’seyeral eommunions shall

have suggested to them the propriety of confining their at-|

tention within the legitimate limits of their sacred avocations. The natural effect of their open deviation from the clerical | path into the political arena has been to inspire with a more

We have good reason to know that the more reasynable of the Tory party have expressed their unqualified disapprovai of the conduct pursued by those black- coated politicians; and liberal Protestants have Leen, and are, loud in their denunciations of the men who have, to a certain extent, brought discredit upon the churches at the altars of which thoy have been unwisely called to minister.

Ix our present issue we can give for Queen's County only a | full and correet statement of the poll from its several polling | divisions, as the returns were made up on Saturday last at the | Sheriff's Court, and the successfal candidates declared duly | elected. Ve have accounts from some of the elections in| King’s and Prinee Counties ; but as the special votes are not | included in any of them, and as sume of the accounts them- | selves are far from being reliable, we consider it best to defer

! y ; - 3 the publication of them all, until we caa get a full and correct | statement from the Sheriffs’ returns. The declaration of re | turned candidates wil] be made at the St. Eleanor’s Court for |

Prince County to-day ; and in Georgetown for King’s County |

to-morrow, (Tuesday). We cannot, therefore, expect to get

an accuraic statement of the returns until Tuesday or Wed-| nesday ev-nings. The following is the result of the polling | in the several districts of Queen’s County, We must pre- mise, that in the third district ef Queen’s County, the small number cast for the Bon. Mr. Mooney docs not at all indicate | the number of his friends and supporters. The evening pre- | vious to the election he sent letters to all the returning | officers in the district, stating that he did not intend to contest the election, and instructing them not to reecive any votes in his behalf.
