The London Lancet has a strong
touch of the penny dreadful about its articles. It is always diseovering something that is going to decimate the human race with startling rapidity. It has found death in the food we eat and the water we drink. It has re- vealed instruments of destruction in the sewing machine and the bicycle, and oow it has got anew life destroyer— “There is no more powerful apparatus tor the conveyance of disease than a book,” says the Lancet, “Measles, scarlet fever, diptheria, sore throat, whooping-cough, bronchitis, and per- haps phthisis'can be communicated by a harmless-leoking beok.’”’ The germs of disease “*may lie for weeks, months, or perhaps years between the pages of abound book, to be dislodged at some unpropitious moments when the vol- ume chances to be handled by a suscep- tible person.” This theory ought to be immensely popular with school boys and opponents of free libraries, but the worst of the discovery is that no remedy can apparantly be provided for the difficulty unless we give up civilization and relapse in inte a condition of life where our pleasure will be to ‘catch the wild goat by the hair and hurl our fances in the sun.’’— Toronto Mail.
