They have been receiving $20 a-month each and clothing. This they considered not sufficient, ard were, we learn, willing to fulfil their arduous duties upon receiving an advance of $4a month. On Monday night last the Council accepted the tender of Shephard Allan, as a night peliceman, for $30 a month.

Another move was made in regard to the working of the Scott Act in Summerside on Friday night last. At a meeting held in Ludiow Hall on that evening at whieh tho Government Officer, Mr. James Caldwell, was present, ho stated that it was his inten- tion to attend to those eases now pending in the Supreme Court, im order te test the validity of the Act. There cam be no denying the fact that the Act, so far, has proven to be a worthiess thing. The sale ef intoxicating liquors has been rapid- ly inereasing, and in fact r imsellers have it all their own way. Itis high time that something was done to ceunteract the evil caused through this open and bare-

An extraordinary sensation was caused at the Land League meeting on the evening of the 26th iast., by & #pegch made by Mr. Diilen onevictiens. He said that next week a last appeal! would be made to the Government to suapend the evictions, near- lv one thousand in number, which were pending. if the Government intended to preceed with those evictions by force, they could not expect them to be carried ovt withont resistance ob the part of the pee- ple. The entire feeling of Ireland would bear him out in declaring that the blood whieh might be shed would be on the heads of Mr. Gladstone and Mr. Forster W hat sould they expect, he asked, if they sought to drive five or ten thousand desperate men out of their homes? Whe was to blame if these men should net be content to be driven out like rates? He would mention a casé” which had not yet reached the papers. ‘The other day an eviction Was going to be carried out in his county. Forty police found the door barricaded. A priest stood by and said he would not inter- tere, but he thought it his duty to inform the police that at the first blew they struck five or six of them would be shot, as men were ineide with loaded rifles. The police held aconsultation and returned to Nenagh. If evictions were earried ont on a large scale in Tipperary, the police must be pre- pared for fighting and resistance. ‘The people would resist, and the next time a man was suet in Ireland tor refusing to leave his home peaceably,the verdict would be *‘ wilful marder,” not against the police- man who shet him, but against Mr. Glad- stone and Mr. Forster.

Sir Fenwick Williams, the new Constable of the Tower, is the General whose name is so honorably connected with the gallant defence of Kars. For tha. preservation of that city he was nominated a Knight Com- mandcer of the Order ef the Bath, created a baronet, and awarded a pension of £1,000 a year, besides being made an henerary D. C. L., of Oxiord, and admitted a freeman of the city of London. Like many ether eminent men, he has had Canadian experi- ences. His first experience here was in Nova Scotia, where he was born in 1800. He commanded the artillery in Canada in 1859, and was Lientenant-Governor of Nova Scotia from 1865 to 1869.
