—The Minister of the Italian War Office recently resigned because the King refused to have a soldier shot after conviction of criminal insubordina- tion.

—English Bishops wore heavy pow- dered wigs until their opposition, in 1831, to the Reform bill made them so unpop- ular that they were glad to drop so con- spicious an ensign of prelicy for fear of being mobbed.

—A special from Paris says James Gordon Bennet !eft Paris on Friday night for St. Petersburg en route for Afghanistan, taking with him Van Woistyn, who is to become correspond- ent for the Herald in the event of war.

—The Legion of Honour includes 47 grand cross, 178 grand officers, 8150 em- wanders, 4,721 officers, and 29,510 knights. Fach of the grand cross re- ceive $600 a year; each of the grand of- ficers, $400; and the commanders $200. Of the officers, four have $200, and the rest $100; 108 knights receive $70, und the rest $50. The whole cost of the order is about $2,500,000 a year.
