A Night’s Burglaries. ADVENTURES ON TWO ARREST, EXAMINATION,
THE BURGLARIOUS YOUTHS — THEIR AND COMMITAL. Tue arrest of Francis Praught and Mi-
chael Burns on Thursday morning, the 4th
inst., on charge of committing three sepa- rate burglarivs during the previous night is another of many instances showing the ne- cessity of a local Reformatory. Prauglit is ®& boy scareely fourteen years of age. He is of highly respectable parents and has, no doubt, been misled by his companion, who is a boy of about sixteen years. Burns was recently arrested for breaking into
Beer & Son's store, and was committed for
trial at the next session of the Supreme
Court for that offence. Hewas subse-
quently admitted to bail—giving as secur-
ity a member of the firm to whom belongs the office in which he was last night arrest- en. His father is in the employ of this firm, and is esteemed by bis employers as well as all who know him for his integrity.
The facts of the burglaries are : At a quar-
ter to two on Thursday morning, Mr. John
Hughes, while on his way to a schooner
which he was loading with produce at Peake’s
Wharf, happened to pass Messrs. Welsh
& Owen's Office. A light was burning
in it at the time, and he, thinking the
bookkeeper--Mr. Wakeford—was late at work, went over to tap at the window.
While in the act of doing so he heard a
crash inside, and looking under the blind
saw two persons in the oflice—one of whom held a hght, while the other was prying open the drawer of adesk with a bar. Mr.
Hughes ran quickly to the wharf and re-
turned with his brother and Captain Aitken,

burglars to come out quietly as he was
armed. . Instead of coming out they rushed into Mr. Owen’s private otfice ; knocked out two panes of glass and broke the centre bar of the window. Mr. Hughes then jumped on the fenco which encloses a lot at
the side of the office. As they were still breaking, he fired a
revolver shot across the window, and said, ‘* ve got more; remain where you are, or come out through the fromt door.” They remained quietly inside. Mr. Hughes then sent his brother for the police ; but before going, he returned with two watchmen ; and the Captain, watchmen and Mr. Hughes surrounded the building. Presently the police arrived, as also did Mr. Wake- ford with keys of the premises. were opened, and all entered. With the light of the officers ‘‘bulls-eye” the two youthful borglars—Pranght and Burns— vere discevered lying close together behind the book-keeper’s desk. They were promplty arrested and sent in charge of two officers to the station—Burns pretending to be very drunk. Two small amounts of specie were found where the prisoners Jay hid—the smaller amount was near Praughit and the larver amount (and also a razor, rolled up in a dirty handkerchief, and two- thirds of a dollar note,) was found where Burns lay. A candle was also found under the safe. The drawer of a desk in which money is kept daring the day was pried open, and its contents scattered about. Two dollars in silver, forty five cents in copper coin and a dollar note—one-third of which
was torn ofi—were taken. These were found where the burglars lay hid.
An attempt was made to_break open an- other drawer, but without success. The prisoner's father, in company with the book-keeper, locked the office doors on the previous evening. Itis believed the burg- lars entered through the front window, as it was largely broken.
On leaving Messrs. Welsh & Owen’s pre- mises, Mr. Hughes with the others, visited his own and found that they had been en- tered by breaking a piece of glass out of a rear winduw ; opening the hasp and lifting up the lower sash. The office docr was pried open with a bar. The oflice drawers were opened and their contents upset. An attempt was evidently made to open the safe, as the maker's name and the front plate were broken off by means of a caulker’s chisel and a hatchet—the face of which was muffled with paper in order to prevent the sound caused by striking. The fancy tops were also knocked off the safe’s hinges. A short piece of candle was taken out of a candlestick which is usually left on the top of a barrel near the office
door. The burglars left through the side door. Burns and Praught are evidently
the parties who committed this burglary. 'The candle which was found under the safe in Mr. Owen’s office, is believed to be the one taken from Mr. Hughes’ Warehouse. It was the same quality as used for ‘“candleing eggs,” and had marks on it similar to t!iose made by the candlestick out of which it is supposed to be taken.
The barber shop of Mr. Owen McMahon, on Grafton Street, was also entered on Wednesday, and five razors and sixty cents were taken therefrom. The razor found where Burns lay hid in Messrs. Welsh & Owen’s office, was identified by a barber in the employ of Mr. MeMahon, as being one of the razors stolen.
Burns and Pranght were fully committed —by the Stipendiary Magistrate, on Thurs- day morning—to be tried at the next ses- sion of the Supreme Court for Burglary.

McLaren Presi- dent, statin, that about four weeks ago, when the directors declared a dividend of three and a half per cent., payable on the Ist prox, they were not aware of some losses made by the bank and concealed from the directors by the late cashier. They have consequently deemed it advisable in the interests of the shareholders and the prosperity of the Pank; to withhold payment of the dividend for this half year,

Duffy was in liquor at the time the attempt was made, and it is generally believed that he had no grounds whatever for accusing Carroll, who is a lame man, and who could doubtless be identified by any who had sense enough to know that an attempt was made to rob him,
