Sue Johanson, also known as the "Sex Lady" didn't always answer people's most intimate questions as a profession. In fact, Sue started as a registered nurse, a title she still holds to this day. To many, it seems like a long stretch from her roots to as an RN to hosting a very popular call in question show on a national television-network and performing on speaking tours. However, it really isn't. I got a few brief minutes to sit down with her before her performance at UPEI Wednesday, Oct. 17th.

How exactly did you get into television?

Well, in 1970 I started a free birth control clinic in a highschool. From working there, I realized that kids needed more sexual education so I decided to go into teaching. I had to go back to university, and I had to go into the United States, because they were the closest place offering those types of cours- es. From there I started teaching in high schools, which was great because since I wasn't an employ- ee of the board of education, I could do whatever the hell I want- ed. And I did. So from there I made news paper headlines, and ended up with my own radio call

How was the first night on air?

I was absolutely terrified. I had no idea if anyone was even going to call in. What I didn't know, however, is that they promoted the hell out of it. I had done hours of homework preparing for people's questions, and I had so many callers I didn't even end up using half of all the knowledge I had studied up on!

What has been your most "memorable" question?

There have been so, so many dif- ferent comments from people. It really depends. It's not as bad as some may think though, we always use call screeners on the show, so you can't get on air if you're drunk, going to be vulgar, or are at a loud party or something. I do get some interesting ones though.

Do you have an example?

Maybe something like, "why does my girlfriend always fart after sex?”

Do you find it hard to keep up with new sexual developments?

I don't find it hard so much, no. What I find is the most difficult is keeping up with the language. It changes constantly from genera- tion to generation, and even from

S One Good Man better Than A Band Of Them?

The thing that impressed me most about Matt Good was his ability to mesmerize one of the largest crowds I have ever seen at the Wave, and what's more is that he did it all by himself. Despite the fact that I knew it was a solo acoustic show, and I wasn't expect- ing anyone else to come out and accompany him on stage, some- where in my mind I guess I hoped a band would just spring up and they'd play some of his more rock- ing songs. I don't want to take away from the power of his solo performance, because he has an incredible voice and writes great songs, but I just happen to really enjoy his more "full" songs like Oh Be Joyful, Alert Status Red, Weapon, and Carmelina.

This was the first time I had actu- ally seen Matt Good, which is sur- prising because I'm sure I've had the opportunity to do so before, as he has been around for a good ten years or more. Also, because I do like his music, I don't know why I wouldn't have made more of an effort to see him. I suppose it has to do with the fact that with the exception of a time about two years ago, when he released his "best of" and I was listening to him a lot, his music has kind of

Do you have an example of that too?

What's your personal life like? Do people stop you on the streets, or in the airport?

All the time. I can't go anywhere at all. People will come up to me anywhere and everywhere and ask me anything. My kids refuse to go anywhere with me at all. If I get stopped on the street, they just keep on walking. They don't want to hear people's questions, or my answers for that matter. They say to me "Mother. We are going to put a bag over your head. Don't. Open. Your. Mouth."

So how do your grandkids feel about your job? Do they watch the show?

No, they're used to my job, they pay no attention to it really. To them, I'm grandma. I make pie, I sew. They are aware of what I do though.

How has the type of questions changed over the years?

Well, with homosexuality becom- ing more acceptable, I get more questions about things like anal sex, and advice on different posi- tions, where as before I would get

flown under the radar for me. I've been aware of his songs, I like his songs, but he isn't an artist I see myself going back to again and again. Respect is one word that comes to mind when I think of Matt Good, because he has always managed to go against the grain when it comes to his career, but he isn't exactly my musical hero.

I suppose what I'm getting at is that I was somewhat disappointed by the show. There was nothing overly memorable for me that I took away and thought to myself, "wow, that was great." The light- ing was really interesting and helped keep the focus on Good, but it still wasn't enough for me. As I said before, he definitely seemed to have the crowd in the palm of his hand, and you have to admire an artist who is that engag- ing, but I felt like something was missing. I think next time I make an attempt to go see him, it will be a show that he his playing with his band.

His site lists dates for another month going back across Canada in support of his new album Hospital Music, so perhaps shortly after that he'll be touring with other musicians. If he manages to make his way back here then, or some other time in the future, maybe I'll have something more flattering to say.

How do you keep up?

Well, my presentation is based on the questions, so that's a pretty good way to keep up on the chang- ing trends, and it's pretty much in real time. It doesn't vary so much presentation to presentation, but I do notice it varying year to year. Last year I got a lot of questions about the Guardasil vaccine, and the Seasonale pill.

Do the questions ever get redundant? Is there anything you hate answering?

Penis size. It's like, Oh God, are we over this yet?

Is there anything you wish peo- ple would ask you?

Good question. When I stop and think about it, I have to say the myths about sex. Other things like "How do I get a g-spot orgasm" and my main concern, anal sex, I cover in the presentation anyway.
