Since South has lost two hearts and apparently must lose a spade as well as a diamond, the game contract looks very bad h but it is not quite hopeless! South cashes his clubs tricks, then his top dia- lmonds. Now he simply exits with his last diamond, and he is fortun- ate enough to lose this trick to East.

When East returns (as he must) a heart or a club, South runs with the spade nine - and West. Is helpless. If he over-ruffs South's nine with the king, dummy In turn over-riills him with the ace. and declarers spade fen takes the last trick. Ir conversely. West 'under-ruifs South's spade nine the
