The cause of the course taken by La Patrie is the stand by the Globe on the reeent student riots in which La Patrie was condemned as a contributory cause.

La Patrie says: In all difficult situa- tions, it is no w recogrized that the Globe invariably abandons us. It left us on the Riel question and in the question of the Jesuits estates. The Globe was one of Mercier’s most violent enemies. The Globe is published in Toronto, the hotbed of Toryisim, and is afraid of public opinion in that city; for instead of moulding public opinion it follows it. The Glebe is nat the official organ of the Liberal party. Itisa newspaper of iodependent tendencies combatting generally for the Libera] party; but its opinion engages no one and does not possess any great value.

Upon enquiry, we find the move bas been effected. Of course it can be nothing el-e but pleasing, to the people in general, to leara thatthe government is beginuing to economize, though it ie the eleventh hour, But the question ne tarally arises, “ls it tor the purpose of economy, or simply anutber way of getting rid of Mr. R K Brace,rotbat a little later they can reopen this office for one of their newly-found friends?” We assume the latrer is the Object.
