Aut the taik among musical people at pres- eut is about Prof. Earle’s Musical Society. From what we can learn every true lover of music intends joining the Society. We hear the first meeting will be held some time next week, of which due notice will be given.

We learn that the Directors of the Citizens’ Skating Rink are making ice as rapidly as possible in the Rink, with a view to open it to the public Christmas night. A large reduction has been made in the price of tickets, to suit the hard times.

Tur Toronto ‘‘ Globe” of Friday has an Ot tawa telegram stating that a rumor is current at the capital that the Mayors of Halifax and and Montreal, Hon. Mr. Wilmot, Hon. Mr. Anglim-and several members will be knighted on the opening of Parliament in February.

Tuomas MeNutty’s wife, who now resides in Montreal, has given birth te triplets, and permission is to be asked from Ottawa that they be named (when christened at St. An- drew’s Church on Sunday) Victoria, Louise and Lorne. McNulty is a laborer. Philan- thropic ladies are interesting themselves in the case.

A Russtan Ortntoy. —An article by the Russian historian Iloeaiska on ‘*The Afghan Question,” says. ‘It is idle to speak con- temptuously, as our newspapers do, of Lord Beacousfield and his fellow Ministers. They are certainly not genial as men, and they are illiberal as politicians; but they are very skil- ful and full of resources, and a conflict with them is not an easy one.”

A Nrw TPivision S. of T. was organized by Donald McLean, G. W. P., at Kelvie Grove, Lot 19, on 7th inst., to be known as ‘‘ Morn ing Star” Division. It has thirty-six charter members. A serious accident befell two men at St. Eleanor’s, on last Saturday afternoon. While helping to move a barn from one site to an- other these two men, Craswell and Jeffery by name, teok a long pole to pry the building with, to help the horses to start it. And while thus engaged the horses suddenly start- ed, causing the pole to swing violently, when it struck Craswell on the arm, inflicting a very bad bruise upon it, and Jeffery on tie side, breaking two or t iree of his ribs, Dr. Shreevs was sent for at once to dress the wounds, and we are glad to hear that both men are now quite out of danger and doing well, though Jeffery’s life was at one time despaired of.— Journal,

The Employment of Females.

In Europe and in the United States the

employment of females in commercial and | ———-

industrious occupations is encouraged by organized institutions. Respectable young women are taught trades, particularly those for which feminine taste is adapted—for in- stance, the manufacture of jewelery, de- signing of pattorns, bookbinding, etc. The national printing office in Paris and the Gobelin tapestry manufactories have, we learn, recently taken women into their em- ployment, and it appears, too, that the result has been satisfactory. But all over France, and, indeed, all over England and the United States, women are employed in hotels, in telegraph offices and in many other positions where diligence, tact and regularity are required. In one instance— diamond cutting—the women have almost cut the men out of the field. Experience has, in fact, established the fact that there are callings in life in which women excel men; and while we shrink from the ad- vocacy of employing women in positions un- becoming their natural characteristics. yet we cannot but hope that a time is approach- ing when the employment of females will be umvre general. Canada appears to be somewhat bebind in this regard, but when our manufactures flourish, as we have reason to expect they will under Protection, the women should have their shares of the spoil. Some years ago the employment of women was generally condemned, but now | it is generally approved of, experience hav- ing shown that the arguments against their
