Leaning Tower of Delft.
The town of Delft, whence all this chinaware comes, is one of the famously clean towns of the Netherlands, being situated in the southern central part of Holand. The word ‘‘Holland,’’ is incor- rectly used by the English-speaking peo- ple, being in reality the name of only one province of the Netherlands. The Eng- lish and Americans have thus improperly transferred the name of a province to that ofa whole country, as bad a mistake as if England were called ‘‘Sussex’’ or the United States ‘‘ New York.’’ This old town is a cgllection of remarkably clean canals, overshadowed with lime trees and_border- ed by the cleanest of clean brick houses, the water for all this cleansing being furnished by the river Schie, which flows into the Maas at Delfshaven. The clean- liness of many of these Dutch towns is really marvelous, They are so clean that it scems a desecration to do any work within their limits. Various travelers have given various explanations for this habit of cleanliness existing among the Duteh; the climate, the abundance of water and the superabundance of servants have all been brought forward as causes. But it seems to me that there is a force back of all these elements which is the real cause of this phenomenon: it is due simply to the temperament of the Dutch people; they are methodical and cleanly by nature, and hence they cannot stand anything that smacks of even a suspicion of dirt.
Delft is famous for other things besides its china and its cleanliness. In the first place, the great boast of Delft is that it was the home of the famous William of Orange and the scene of his unfortunate death, and, secondly, it was the birthplace of Hugo de Groot, the great statesman and scholar, whose fame is linked to that of the neighboring university of Leyden.
The celebrated Prinsenhof, which was the palace of William the Silent, the founder of Dutch independence, is on the Oude Delft canal.
Opposite the Prinsenhof stands the fa- mous ‘Oude Kerk,’’ or cld church of Deift. It has a leaning tower which, while by no means as marked as that of the famous tower at Pisa, is still far enough out of plumb to attract attention and invite investigation. Its inclination was probably produced accidentally for the tower is tall and heavy and its base is surrounded by various canals, which would tend to weaken the stability of its foundations. Moreover, the Dutch have no desire to do such an unorthodox thing as to build a church with a leaning steeple. In this old church is a monument to the memory of Admiral von Tromp, who is the great paval hero of Holland.
In the square market-place which lies to the west of the Prinsenhof stands the so-called Nieuwe Kerk, or new church of Delft, which, although called new, was built if 1412, and is in reality older than the old ghurch.
In the open square which Meg in the Groote Markt between the Nieuwe Kerk and thie Stadhuis is a bronze statue of the other great” celebrity of Delft, Hugo Gro- tius, or Hugo de Groot. This great Dutch scholar was born in this town ia 1583, the day before the assassination of the Prince of Orange. He became involved in political troubles early in life and was imprisoned for several years but finally escaped and became eventually the Swe- dish ambassador to France, in which ser- vice he died. His principal claim to fame is as the founder of the science of inter- national law.
Delft is off the line of the conventional sightseer; what few visitors it does at- tract generally run down there for the day from The Hague, which is only a few miles distant. Therefore when we stop- ped at Delft we found that our presence ereated quite & sensation in that section of the town, Our little inn evidently was not honored often by the presence of travelers. The best rooms were small and dark, while the beds were single, each one being completely enveloped in cur- tains of heavy dark-colored calico. Every- thing about the hotel, however, was serupulously clean, We could not find any one who was able to understand the simplest English; even our best German provoked no intelligent response. As our attempts at Dutch were as thoroughly hopeless, it was hard to make even our simple wants known. Imagine our sur- prise then, on being awakened in the morning by hearing a voice ask at the door in excellent English whether we would have tea or chocolate for breakfast.
On going to the breakfast-room we found a sweet, bright-faced, intelligent- looking Dutch girl who said that she was the niece of the proprietor of the inn; that her aunt had sent for her to attend us and serve as guide to the town as long as we stayed.
On leaving our {nn tn the morning we walked straight to the nearest china store to buy Delft ware. Shades of Delft!
We were offered the common Japanese ware which has filled our own shops for years to the full as being better and more novel than Delft ware. Finally, we
succeeded in getting some original ware, ' but we were regarded rather suspiciously —probably as being either feeble-minded er very eccentric. We visited also the potteries, avhich are beginning to be again the show-places of the town.
Our New York Dutch girl proved an ex- cellent guide, for with her care we learned * much of Delft and its customs. Here, on the edge of the town, we found the great Polytechnic School of Engineering, which is the real military school ef Holland, for here the Dutch youth is taught to fight against the sea, This study of civil en. gineering is necessary to the «xistence of jJIclland; a country that dies in great part below the level of the sea must be guarded, that it may pot he swept from the map again. This action was taken with a portion of the Netherlands to save fi.e country from the Spanish in the six- fecnth century,

Holland is a fortress; its mills are its tow- ers; its cathedrals are its gates; the islands the advanced forts; and, like a true fort- ress, it shows to its old enemy, the sea, only the tops of its bell-towers and the roofs of its houses in defiance and deri- sion.—J. cent of the journalistic fraternity of this Territory are down on the Kicker, and _hever miss an opportunity to give “Whack, our feeling toward the entire lot is a fatherly one, and we are always cheerfully willing to do a brother «ditor a favor. Last weck we got word from Brother Babcock of the Pine Hill Record- er that things were not going right with him. Day before yesterday we mounted our mule and trouble was. We soon ascertained that he had been licked.so often that the sand had all pertcred out of his craw. He started the Recorder with the intention of making it a rival of the Kicker: but, alas, he doesn’t know one end of a gun from the other ard is too weak in the back for a rough and tumble fight. When- ever he has published a spicy paragraph during the past six months, someone has called at the office and wiped the floor with him and made him feel that life was not worth the living. He was expecting two or three callers when we got over there and it ‘didn’t take much coaxing on our part to induce him to stand back and let us take a seat at his editorial table. In fact, he had gone home and gone to bed, and we were running things, when a big buffer of a teamsier struck the office to lick the editor for publishing an item to the effect that spotted horses were going out of style and had suffered a drop in prices, The duffer didn’t want to argue the matter or demand a retraction. He was boiling over to lick somebody, and he was no sooncr inside the office than he made a dive for us. He picked up a hot iron from the very start. We had him on his back and thoroughly licked in less than five minutes,and we had no sooner let him up than he subscribed for three copies of the Recorder and paid in advance.
We had only got our second wind when in came a citizen of the town to lick Brother Babcock, for saying there were too many saloons in the place. He didn’t know one editor's back from another, but when we wheeled on him and proceeded to bump and bang the breath out of his car- pass such a look of amazement stole into his face that we thought he was preparing to drop dead. In the course of five hours, which was all the time we could spare that day, four different individuals came in to make Bro. Babcock get down on his marrow bones and plead for mercy and be mopped over the floor. There were four separate and distinct surprise parties, and in each case we came out on top and se- cured cash in advance subscribers for the Recorder. We smashed two knuckles on our right hand, but the pain and annoy- ance were more than offset by secing the radical improvement wrought in Bro. Babcock. When he tame over and learned what we had done, he was a new man. We put him up toa trick or two in the manly art, and before leaving had the sat- isfaction of secing him wallop the propri- etor of a poker-room, who had called to stop his paper and punch the editor’s ead. We believe the Recorder man has passed the Rubicon and will be all O. K. from this time on, but some day next week we shall ride over again and give hima few boxing lessons and teach him the use of a revolver. We will willingly do as mucl: for any other editor within 50 miles of us. We have always held that an edi- tor should be on top, and, though we have had to Knuckle on several occasions, our average is way ahead of the game.
Postal,Matters.—The Lone Tree Herald, which, by the way, is a very good weekly newspaper for one run by a red-headed cross-eyed man, was pleased to say last week that the editor of the Kicker was still hankering to be Postmaster of this town. We acknowledged the corn. The only thing we have reached out for and failed to get since we struck Arizona is a post office. When we had the Kicker ona paying basis and had been elected Mayor of the town, Territorial Senator, president of the Publishers’ Association and several other things, we grabbed for the Post Office. The present incumbent isa mean man from the ground up. He is not in sympathy with any party or any human being except himself. If he can find one single man in the town who does not hate him for a skunk, we'll for- feit $500 to any charity he may name. It was our firm belief that we could bgost him outin a week, he still stieks. It is one of the mysteries of politics. We have licked him on the street and shot at him through the general delivery window. We havefsought to buy him off, and we have sent three different petitions to Washington praying for his removal and our appointment.
We frankly admit that we have left no stone unturned in our efforts to handle Uncle Sam’s mail in this locality, but we are no nearer the zenith of our hopes than when we began. While confessing to defeat and disappointment, we are try- ing to be a philosopher about it. Even post offices come to him who waits. In the course of time this plum will fall inte our hands, as other plums have done, and realizing this we have contracted to build an addition to the Kicker office to be used as a post office. Nothing is too good for an editor, and the editor who is not constanntly reaching out after the fat things of life deserves to end his days in the poorhouse.—M. Quad.
Land and Water Tricycle.
A tricycle which can be made to travel either on iand or water is the invention of a Hamburg genius named George Pink- ert. The machine is so large and heavy that no such speed can be gotten out of it as is made every day upon the boule- vards, but Herr Pinkert thinks he has accomplished much in doing nine and one-fourth miles an hour on land and seven and one-half on the smooth surface of a river.
