School Board _ Estimates Approved ,

The regular monthly meeting of. the City School Board was held yesterday afternoon with Dr. I. J. Yoo presiding. The estimates for 1949 as presented by the Finance Committee were approved. A large amount of routine business was transacted. _

Mention was made of the fact that on Friday last Mr. D. B. Lusty. Organizer of the C.B.C. Maritime School Broadcasts spoke to the teachers of the City Schools in Rochford Square School about util- izing the radio programmes. Mr. Lusty stated that each class could probably not utilize more than three or four programmes, but for these there should be preparation of the class by the teacher, and n follow up discussion period after the broadcast. Mr. Lusty stressed the fact that radio broadcasts are time consuming and costly to pro- duce, nevertheless they are well worth while, bringing recognized experts on the different subjects into all classrooms. Other countries SDend large sums of money on this type of education. In the United States it has been incorporated in- to the formal educational system. Inspectors oversee radio work and expect reports from teachers on this phase of education. Miss Mabel Matheson, President of City Teach- ers Institute presided.

During the meeting appreciation was expressed that both officials of lhe City Firemen and Physical Fil- ness Dcpnrimcnt were present nl lhe school sports in (he Forum. The secretary, Mr. J. E. Burnett. read n bulletin from Navy Lea- gue Headquarters, altncuncing the establishment of a Maritime Mus- eum at H. M. C. Dockyard. Hall- fax, the purpose of which would be "to collect under one roof. place on public display. and preserve for posterity, relics and documents pertaining to Canada's maritime history." Any museum pieces available should be reported to th" Provincial Division and steps will be taken to supply shipping in- structions.

"The year 1948 has been a very busy and interesting one for the Prince Edward Island Division of tho Navy League of Canada. “During the year nine meetings of your Executive were hcld and were very well attended. We weru honoured on two occasions with the presence of our Dominion Secretary. Mr. H. R. Giliard of Toronto. Lt. Comdr. A. D. Reeburn, R.C.N.(R). Area Officer for Sea Cadets also attended several of our meetings. and, by his kindly interest. made a great contribution to the success of our work here. Captain A. P. Muagrave, 0.B.E., R.C.N., Director of Sea Cadets, Ottawa, also attend- ed onc of our meetings, and by his wise counsel and advice helped us materially.

"Of course the highlight of the year was the inspection of our Sen Cadet Corps by Commodore A. M. Hope, 0.313.. R.C.N., on May 28th. Commodore Hope showed a real in- terest in each Cadet and was n great inspiration to our boys. In- cidentaily, our Corps was rated the hast Sea Cadet Corps in the Mari- time area.

“Another highlight for the Cadets was the Sea Cadet Camp at Camp Major, Nova Scotla. August 1 to August 14. You will have present- ed to you for your consideration the Report of the Sea Cadet Com- mittee by Captain Connolly.

"Captain Connolly is now the Commanding Officer of H. M. C. S. Queen Charlotte, ao that he will not be able to continue as chair- man of the Sea Cadet Committee. Captain Connolly rendered n grcnt service while chairman of this Committee. and his place will be hard to fill. We are assured of Captain Connolly's continued inter- est and support.

"As is well known here, the ma- jor activity of the Navy League in this Province is the carryinl on of the Sea Cadet program. We are very fortunate in having an excel- lent group of instructors who de- vote their time and talent to the instruction of our Cadets.

Fishing Trout Out 0i Season

Yecter‘ y afternoon the guns od- ficer of the R.C.M. Police, Char- lottetown and the N.C.O. in charge Montague Detyhment teamed up and went on a blitz through south- ern Kings county.

During the course of patrol op- erations five persons were caught in the act of fishing trout out of season, two of thfcn a man andhis wife recently arrived from the States. A number of 300d ‘sized winter run sea trout and a. quant- ity of fishing equipment were seiz- ed by the officers and the owners notified to appea in court. The offenders hailed from Cambridge, Lower Montague and Maryland, U. S.A. It is understood that all stand liable to prosecution for three sep- erate offences under the Game Acl fishirfg for trout out of season, fishing for tmut through the ice and angling without licenses.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police have launched a drive to put a crimp in the practice of catching trout before the season opens. The season on trout opens on April 16th.

Essay Contest

"Our Division also co-operated in the Navy League of Canada's Na- tionni Essay Contest. I wish to pay tribute to those-who took part in the contest. The essays received. while few in number, were all of a very high calibre. The task of making the awards was a very difficult one indeed for the judges.
