The alumni of Cornell University have yoted to establish a $200 scholarship for women students of the Univereity, and are now raising funds for its endowmeat. “The scholarship will be filled for the first time in 1895-6.

The largest plow in the world is said to be owned by Richard Gird, of California. It stands 18 feet high and weighs 36,000 pounds. It has 12-inch ploughshares and turns cver 50 acres of ground per day, using something over a ton of coal to propel it four miles an hour.

The earliest known statue is one that has been recovered from an Egyptian tomb. It is that ofa sheik or head man of a village, is made of wood, with eyes of giase, and is evidently a portrait. It is 6,000 years old.

Japan consists of 3,850 islands, with an area of 147,000 square miles; population, | 40,072,000. It is saida larger proportion } of the population can read than in any other country in the world. They adopted a constitutional form of governmest In 1890. Thev have 28,000 schools with 72,- 000 teachers and 3,410,000 pupils.
