Let us consider these ideas. lu the first place our “Free Schools” are, according to reports, too expensive to be main ained solely by the government. Io the second place these schools are the. means of en- couraging the people to manifest a very indifferent disposition towards education. If, asthe Patriot saye, education pays, those benelited thereby have a right to pay for it. For instance, if a butcher knows thats farmer has an ox which would briog a high market price he does net ask another wan to buy it for hit. No, be considers well what it is worth. pays the owner upon that consideration, and is satisfied. Ir the ox was given tothe butcher gratuitously lie might not take the trouble to.consider its worth and it isa change if hie would regard the giver as an olject of admiration. Hence, as it can be shown that education pays, let those bene- fited thereby pay for it,—else they will never take the trouble to consider whether it pays or not.

Well may “ Taxpayer” eay there is not public spirit enough in every district to keep up @ good school. Considering that school districts are directly benefited by education, they should pay as much, if not more, than the Government which is indirectly benefited. If the districts bad to pay their due share, the Gcvernment would not bave ¢0 many schools to sup- port; for, where poesible, two or three or more districts would unite. The: uniting of the districts would be a great boon to education, sicce two or three districts would contribute to the support of one school, and the Government grant could also go to that one instead of the two or three. By doing so Prince Edward Island would indeed have excellent schools.

To locate a schoo! site for two or three districts would not be a difficult matter. To provide school room would not be hard. To carry the children to and from one place every scheol day would be an easy task forthe Government. Pennsy]- vania, a go-ahead State indeed, is uniting the school districts, partiy because of the unspeakable advantage ove good «choo! would have over the three or four plod- ding along in an uncertain way, and partly because of the saving derived therefrom. Massachusetts has good schools placed in suitable lecalities, and some of the cbil- dren are carried thereto from a distance. In this Province, wherever there are a few children, we have ihe expense of building a school, of keeping it in repair, of furnishing fuel, and of employing a teacher, and after all the returrs are by ho means commensurate to the expeadi- ture,—whereas the children might be car- ried to and from a ycod school for a small sum,

As regards reducing the teachers’ salar- ies, it ia a dark blot upon our Island fame To compel teachers to teach under value 's Only worthy of an “iron heel” government. If we are British subjects let us not dis grace our birthright by using the teachers as slaves. Let the teachers themselves have a say io fixing their salarie-,and also in controlling the pedagogical profession in other respects.

The severe illness of J. D. McLellan, only son of our esteemed neighbor Danie! McLellan, Exq., has cast a gloum over the community. Sincere hopes are stil! entertained fur his recovery. The latter is a graduate of McLean Training School for nurses at Waverly formerly ot Somerville Maas.
