1 will not attempt to reproduce or elabor- ate any of his arguments. They are sound as regards the wrong done to the bona fide members of the medical profession, with

But the wrong done to the public isa gigantic one, and that it should be tolerat- ed and suffered to exist in a country like ours, surpasses belief. In the country the evil seems to exist, and there only, Quacks cannot flourish in our cities. The man who would dare to open an office, and under- take to deal with the awful problems of life and death, without the necessary legal authority, isa scoundrel. That there is no law to prevent his doing so is monstrous, and the sooner such a law is placed upon our statute book, the better for the profes- sion and the. general public.

O. G. T., deem it our duty, as a small token of the esteem in which you are held by us, to present you with these few parting lines, conveying as they doin a feeble manner our feelings of heartfelt sorrow at your unexpected departure.

The Critic Criticised.
Str,—You have twice charged the late horrible tragedy to the heads of families as the direct result of what you have termed the baneful custom of the country, viz: that of young men and women sitting up alone at night; and made the sweeping as- sertion that is a common thing for a young man to go to a farm house and be allowed to sit up with a young daughter of the house till daylight. Now, such a sweeping state- ment as that is very unjust, and quite un- ealled for. Why you should so severely condemn one habit, even if it were a gene- ral custom, and never even mention an- other equally pernicious custom, one that cannot be charged to the country alone, is very strange. I refer to those partics or gatherings where young people are allowed to act just as they please, without any re- sponsible person or persons to see that they are properly conducted. And there are many other demoralizing cnstoms that our young people have great need to be shielded rom. Even in what some call good. society, there are things allowed that are not all that could be desired for their moral purity, such as drinking, card playing, reading bad literature, and various other things, all of which are equally as demoraliziug as what you have mentioned. Let us by all means uphold moral purity, but don’t condemn one habii and shut our eyes to others just as bad. And permit me to tell you that even your publications are not all that could be desired for the growth of the moral purity of our young people. Young people raust have good reading to feed their minds. In many parts of the country the newspapers are nearly all they have to read, and for that reason they should be made as inter- esting as possible, without anything profane or that would in any way lead young minds astray. Hoping that you will not take this unkindly, but in the spirit that it is given, in behalf of the rising generation who are being moulded by the influences that now surround them fur good or evil, therefore it is necessary that the newspapers be free from all profanity. There is too much of the sublime and ridiculous being carried on in thesedays, allof which havea bad moral ten- dency on our young people, and if not re- proved by public opinion, will eventually undermine the basis of all right action. If people are taught tothink aright, there will be no trouble about their acting right under ‘all circumstances. So, Sir, you have a great responsibility resting on you. There- fore, see that you give good food for the minds of our youth. We want a better selection than ‘*The Pirate” next time. Rustic.

Vernon River Bridge Heard From. A meeting of farmers resiling in this locality was held in the Seal River School House on Wednesday, the 1&th inst., for the purpose of discussing the Weights and Measures Act. Mr. Robert C. McRae was called to the chair, and,the undersigned appointed Secretary. The subject was ably discussed from the various standpoints, and the views of the different speakers were given freely and to the point. After a full and lengthy discussion by the leading farmers of the district, the following resolution was moved by Mr. Owen Sullivan and seconded by Mr. John McGillivray, and carried by a large major- ity of the meeting, there being only four dissenting voices : Whereas, Several public meetings have been held in different sections ef the country in reference to the best method of shipping otatoes, viz., by weight or measure ; and
Whereas, At some of those meetings resolu- tions were adopted which do not fairly represent the general feelings of the farmers in this locality ; and Whereas, It is the opinion of this meeting that a measure of capacity can be made to give justice and satisfaction to both farmer and trader. That in view of the limited time which the farmers have to do their shipping in the fall of the year, especially in the southern section of the country, ‘t is materially i; their inter- est to secure the speediest way of discharging their loads ; and Whereas, We believe, in the interest of farmer aud trader alike, a measure of capacity would best serve their purpose, and be far less liable to abuse ; therefore Resolved, That it is the firm opinion of this meeting that a measure of c»pacity containing 24 imperial gallons, would be a just and fair measure, to contain two and one half bushels, After a unanimous vote of thanks had been tendered the chairman for his im- partial ccnduct in the chair the meeting was brought to a close,

Giving up Polygamy.
The annual conference of the Mormon Church, which has closed a four days’ session, brought to Utah people froim all the States and Territories where there are Mormons. The feature of the occasion was an epistle signed by Wilford Woodruff in behalf of the twelve apostles, which differs materially in tone from similar papers issued by his predecessor. It is an exhor- tation to the people to live pure lives, being simply such an epistle as any bishop or pastor of a Christian congregation might present to his flock. The avoidance of any mention of the continuance of the practice of polygamy in the epistile goes for to show that the Mormons are sincere in their
