He had brought his face so mine that I could feel his hot breath, and I fancied I could feel the heat in those terrible eyes. The long keen blade he was holdiag over me—for what? To tike my life it L feiled. |

“Guess! Guess!” he screamed. “If vou fail it will be your last guess in this

near. I could not escape, for the strong cord bound me to that chair I could not lift: and I could lie there and lose my life. What could I do?

“Jt’s a hard guess,” he said, “and I will give you three minutes to answer it.

[ summoned all my courage, which had never yet failed me, even 10 the awful hour of battle, and looking him steadily in the eye, said:

“J know you, sir; so where is the use of guessing; I have seen you on the but- tle field, marsha!ling your men on to Vic- tory: L have seen you cut down a score of men with your single arm; I have seen you put to flight a whole battalion. I know you, everybody knows you—your name is in my mouth.”

I remembered what he had said about leading his veterans, and had tried this harrangue to divert his attention. I paused to mark the effect.

“Yes—yes doctor. But whatis it?” he exclaimed again. “Thirty seconds !”’

Great Heaven! What would I not have given fora clue to that madman’s fancy! Thirty seconds, and how short a second is! The knife was raised higher, that it might gain a momevtum by the distance. His body was braced for the stroke and his eye upon the mark.

“Ten seconds more !”’ he cried, ‘What is it?”

There was only cne hope for me, and that was toguess. 1 felt that he consid- ered himself some great wan—xs he had spoken of veterans—-some military chieftan. I thought of cur own heroes aud the names of many cf them were upon my lips, but I dared not utter them. It wasthe greatest chance game that I had ever played—my life depond- ed on the guessing ofa name. I thought of the European generals, bul cast them aside again and came back to our own side of the water.

“Pwo seconds!’ scrcached the lunatic.

“Without a thought, almost without a volition, I spoke a uname, breathing a prayer that it might be the right one: Napoleon Bonepa: te !”’

* « Right!” said the madman, throwing

aside his knife, and undoiag the cords that held me. ‘‘I was mistaken in you, doctor. You have true gevius; this is your first lesson ; come at this hour every evening, and I will teach you the beauti- ful art—the way to immortal fame.”

AsI arose from the chair, weak and trembling, the door opeoed softly, and four strong men entered and secured the maniac, I started for home well pleased that I had got through with my first guessing lesson, and fervently hoping that I should never be called upon to’ take another.
