CoMMENTING On the death of Mr. John C. Haliburton, the Halifax Herald saye:-—‘Mr. Haliburton was one of the most highly es- teem d <itizens of Halifax, a representative of the ideas and ways of the past generation, and his death will be sincerely regretted by a large circle of friends. He was the last male sur- vivor .of the Halibarton family, of which his father, the distinguished chief justice, Sir Brenton Haliburton, was the head in Nova >cotia. He succeeded Sir Rupert George, as clerk of the Levislative Counerl, and for over half a century, possessed he entire conti tence and esteem of taat body. Mr. Haliburton was probably the only Nova Scotian who held the same cflice for fiity- three years! He was the soul of honor, and almost worshipped his father. His appear- ance would indica‘e that he would be one of the last men inthe world to fight a duel hut when a yourg man he regarded some remarks of Hon Joseph Howe as being dero- gatory tothe character of Sir Bre: ton, who was then onthe bench, and promptly chal- levged Mr. Howe to fizht aduel. The chal- leuge was accepted. Seconds were appointed,

and early in the morning the two men met at a spot in ‘Tower woods, near the centre of the park. Haliburton fired, but missed his mark. Howe, fiad-

ing himself uninjured, returned the fire but instead of aiming at his opponent, fired in the air. The code of honor having thus been satisfied, both men shook hands and returned to their homes and their friends. The affair was kept quiet for some days, bit when it be- came knowa created greas excitement in the city. Thus ended one of th: few duels fought in Nova Scotia. rer Ts
