BURNING OF ALEXANDAUA.—-The Boston Post fays—Li the accounts of tie burning of the city of Alexandria, by Gen, Banks's troops, are correct, it was the most infamous transection to be found | in the records of the war. The dwellings ot Union men—seldiers in the Union army—were given to the flames, and their ueprotected inmates ~wowen and children — leit without shelter or fued. A letter from Cairo, [linvis, te the New York World says:—“ As might be expected, the Women desired to go along with the Federal army, where their husbands bad gone. ‘They ap- plied to General Banks with tears and entreaties, to be alluwed to go on board the trausports. They were refused! They became frantic with excitement aud rage. Their sereams and piteous ¢ries were heart-rending. With tears streaming down their cheeks, wowen and children begged acd unplored the beats to take them on board The officers of the boats were desirous of doing #, but there was the peremptory order frou Ge- teral Banks net to allow any white citizen to go aboard. A rush would have been made upon the boats, but there stood the guard with fixed bay- ouets, and none could mecnt the stage plank ex- cept they bure the special permit of the Coinmand- ing General. Yet room was found for five or six thousand negroes that bad been gathered in from the surrounding country ! But no reom couid be found for white women and children, whose hus- bands and brothers were in the Federal arny, and whose houses had just been burned by the Federal torches !”

BENEVOLENT IRISH SOCIETY PIC-NIC.

fPHE ANNUAL PIC-NIC of the BENEVOLENT IRISH SOCIETY will be held at * WARREN FARM” on MONDAY, the ith JULY next. The Steamer Heatuer Bevre has been engaged for the day, and will make two trips in the forenoon — namely, leaving Pownal Wharf for Warre. Farm at the hour of 9 o'clock, aud aguin at Li o'clock. Violinists have been en- vayved for the occasion ; and the College Band will ilso be in attendance. No one bat the person au- thorized will be allowed to sell liqnors or refresh- meuts on the grounds, and any one attem ying to violate this regulation will be removed by the Com- mittee and Stewards of the Society. In she even- ing. the whole party will leave Warren Farm at 5oelock nto wth for the purpose of proceeding ou hourd the ‘ Heather Belle,’ and enjoying a sail in the Bay previous to returning to the City.

The Connnittee are making every preparation to render the Pic-Nic a successtul one, and satisfactory both to themselves and guests. Should Monday prove unfavorable, the Pic-Nic will come off on the following day.
