DELAYED ADOLESCENCE

A young physician relates his a x- perience with a teen-age boy who was so small and undeveloped that his parents were afraid he would never grow or develop into a man. The physician took him' out of school for one session. had him get outdoors. run and jump. play games when possible. increased the amount of his food intake by 25 per cent. had him rest an hour every aftemoon. and get. an extra hours sleep at night.

There was no change for several months and then the boy began to increase in height. width and weight and this continued for about two years until the boy was as tall and weighed as much as other boys his age. The parents were grateful to the physician who was also pleased to see the boy develop under

However. with a little longer ex--, perience. the physician began to wonder if his efforts to increasel the 130Y'5 height. weight. and muscu-l lar development by spending more time outdoors. eating more food and getting more sleep, gave ms gland system 8. fresh start or if he would have grown and developed DFODETIY anyway-that. for some reason. his development was "de- layed."

In the book "Endocrine Treat- ment in General Practice," edited by Dre. Max A. Goldzieher and Jos- eph W. Goldzieher. is stated that

those children who, for some un- known reason. mature much later than the average, but. who, if given sufficient time develop normally "without" treatment. "Thus delay- ed adolescence is a constitutional variation in the normal pattern of growth and development."

These physicians believe that the treatment of these "delayed" causes of growth and development, when the gland system is not at fault, is by psychology. When delayed adol- escence ls causing an inferiority co plex and the boy is an object o ridicule to his schoolmates, an. explanation to him that he is likely to catch up with other boys in II short time. giving drugs to stimu-; late sex growth and some sex ex-l tract to supply what is missing: which can be taken by mouthif will raise his morale.

In the case of girls. bringing on '

puberty or adolescence by direct use of sex extract. without psycho- logical treatment. appears to work best.

The thought, then. is where the boy or girl is undersized or under- developed physically tsometimm greatly overweight). the parents should not try to treat. the child. but place the child under the care of the family physician. Physicians today have an aid not possessed by physicians of previous days - that. is. gland extracts such as thyroid. pituitary. adrenal and sex, which can be of real help where puberty has been "unduly delayed."
